He is right. He did not tell you not to buy it but that he was not to drink it.
Well, yeah! Since when do men listen to what they're supposed to do? :confused3

I have really bad reflux - had surgery twice and take meds twice a day. No one has ever mentioned Diet Coke being a problem. I know about caffeine avoidance, but I think that's it.

Having no soda is reflux 101. None, nada, nothing. No carbonic acid period! Nothing acidic in the food groups. No tomato anything. Pizza, taco's, sauce, orange, lemon, lime, alcohol. No salsa, spices, pepper...
Wine is killer....:lmao: OK, that is a hard one to give up.
There is an entire list of foods you cannot have.

Have you modified your diet? I am having the hardest time. All the stuff I love kills me. Now, DH does it without drugs. He follows a strict diet.

He tells me that you can have the stuff above...but like only 1 thing per week. For some reason Basil sends him to the hospital for a lidocane cocktail.

Coffee is a real killer for me. Fortunately, I was never a coffee addict but I did enjoy a cup of it here and there. If I have one now, it is just awful. Sick for days.

But good thing you did give up caffeine (in major amounts) for the pregnancy.
Years ago one of the squadron wives mas a major soda drinker and didn't give it up while pregnant. When her baby was born he went into caffeine withdrawal. The Military Hospital accused her of illegal drug use and did blood tests on her and the baby.

How could they accuse her of illegal drug use? Caffeine isn't illegal.

To all of you suffering from acid reflux, I'm so sorry. I had no clue that there was this much suffering involved--not to mention giving up all the good stuff. The things I learn on the DIS Boards.

Ironically enough, the only time I've ever even had heartburn was when I was pregnant with dd and had given up everything interesting. :lmao: I didn't know what it was--the doctor had to explain it to me.

I'm with Mal's husband...soda is the thing I miss the most. I do cheat at least once/week. I have found out that if I order a soda from a fast food place or somewhere that it's watered down with ice, it doesn't bother me quite as much. I just can't give it up completely. Before all this, I drank soda for breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner and snack. :confused3 Now all I drink is water. :guilty:

I talked to a lady the other day who told me that a friend of hers has reflux. This lady said she always thought the symptoms were all "in her friend's head". Ummm, no.

I love DIET PEPSI but as the years have gone on I found UNLESS I drank it with an enormous amount of ice...I would get all bloated. Never had any issues w/reflux. BUT over the years I have completely cut back to one d.p. at lunch and one at dinner.

NOW MY DS. He is 24yo and he STARTS his day at 8am w/ a diet coke and ENDS his day(11pm) with a diet coke. His DGF is begging him to STOP all this diet coke drinking. He is now drinking it w/a ton of ice....but I have noticed lately he has been complaining of acid reflux BUT I just assumed he was having some heartburn or issues FROM A MEAL he might have just had....doesn't seem to be the case here as I read through this Thread. He may just be suffering with way to much caffeine or aspertine(?)...WOW...I am going to let him read through this entire Thread.

Fortunately I don't drink soda very often. Maybe that's why they didn't tell me to give it up? I'm also not a wine drinker, but I love beer. I just can't have it very often.

The main culprit for me is peanut butter of all things! or nuts in general, but only at night before bed.

I'm on some new meds (used prilosec, acifex, and nexium previously). this is an older med called reglan (metoclopramide). It is working great and my copay is less. Of course I am also really avoiding the triggers too.

Believe it or not I didn't have heartburn when I was diagnosed with GERD. It was the acid dripping back into my lungs that kept my asthma out of control that was the clue. It was definitely confirmed though with testing. (including the kind where you wear that tube down your throat for 24 hours)>

When I went to the hospital to do one of my GERD tests (involved a moving tube and swallowing water), the appt staff forgot to put me on the books. I was the only appt. that morning. My doctor came in two hours later thinking that his first appt wasn't until 10 not 8 am.

He's a very, very distinguished and well known gastro guy who had a little trail of residents following him. When he came in the room before I would let him do the test I told him I had to ask him why he was late two hours. I asked him if he had a drug or alcohol problem - since no one in the hospital could locate him. I was dead serious. Poor man was so flumoxed (I've always wanted to use that word). He was so shocked that I asked that question that he was just sputtering denials and excuses. He wasn't mad just totally taken off guard.

Once I was convinced that it really was a clerical error I let him go ahead with the tests. I'm sure those residents never forgot that.

You reminded me that peanut butter is also a trigger for me. It seems to be okay if I eat on a celery stick, but PB&J sandwiches make me feel bad. The other day I ate a tuna sandwich. About an hour later I had terrible reflux.

Like you, I never have the classic heartburn. I just feel very acidy and I feel things come up in my throat.

I remember taking Reglan at the very beginning of my journey, before I knew I had reflux. I didn't take it long because something about it freaked me out and then I read that it causes problems having something to do with crossing the blood/brain barrier?? I can't remember. But I do know that its mechanism for making it work is that it clears your food out of your stomach faster. That way it can't sit around and reflux back up.

I don't experience heartburn in my chest, but I get sharp stabbing pains in my back between my shoulder blades. Indigestion (before taking the Prilosec) and the throat symptoms. The throat symptoms are by far the worse. The lump in my throat, the burning and the reflux. Ugh.

I've never had sharp, stabbing pains in my back, but when my reflux is "acting up" I will definitely get a dull achey pain in my back between the shoulder blades. Doesn't happen a lot but when it does, I know I better behave!
