I am taking a cake decorating class. Today, I had to bake a cake to take to the class tomorrow. The instructor told us to use an 8 inch cake pan made by Wilton. It is much deeper than any cake pans I've used in the past. It holds an entire cake mix.

So, I make a cake. I baked it at least 15 minutes longer than the recipe called for. I take it out of the oven and it falls. The entire middle caves in. I cut it open and it isn't even close to being done. So, I make another one. I ended up baking it for over an hour at 350 degrees. This is way longer than called for. I let it cool for 15 minutes and turn it out on the plate so that it can finish cooling. It is perfect! I'm so pleased!

I leave it on the counter. I don't want to put it in the carrier until I know it is completely cool. DD and I go out to eat.

We come home and find that Salem, out little black cat, has been nibbling on my perfect cake. ARGH! I don't care. I'm going to practice on it and it will probably look pretty bad when I'm done with it anyway. I'll just make DD eat it afterward. She loves the cat!

I'm glad to hear that things like that happen to other people too! :rotfl2:

OMG! I'm glad to hear that that's happened to other people too!

One time I made a valentines day cake and I walked out of the room FOR A SECOND and my chocolate heart became a broken heart within seconds of my dog seeing it. :scared1:

But I fixed it. she ate a bite or two off the side of the heart, so I cut it in half, and made the cut jagged, so it looked like a broken heart. I iced it and my mom and grandma (whom the cake was for in the first place) loved it. :cool1:

(I gave the dog the half she was nibbleing. so no dog slobber made it to the part everyone else ate. )

Now I'm hopeing and praying the tag fairy doesn't see this. ;)

You fed me DOG cake???????

yyyuuuuummmmm.....dog and cat cake.....

Let's just hope there arent any extra crunchies in there (cat owners KNOW what I am talking about!!!)

I took a cake decorating class and had a cat eat the cake too!

My roommates cat was just a kitten and I didn't think he could jump very far. I put it on top of the refridgerator to cool with a tea towel over it, just in case. It was a two layer cake and one entire layer was GONE. We were expecting big trouble in the litter box, but he seemed to take it in stride.

If it makes you feel any better, I've seen our cat lick some undesirable spots as well. That's why I'm not going to eat it. I'm going to tell DD that I made it all just for her!

OMG! This thread is just too funny!

Feralpeg, just wondering if you're still making those beautiful Disney gift baskets? I remember once you posted that you wouldn't be making anymore but I thought that was because of your upcoming trip to CA. They were so beautiful ~ I hope you haven't quit completely! But now you're getting into cake decorating.....I bet those cakes are gonna have a favorite mouse on them!

It's possible. We'll see how good I am at decorating. Unless I can keep the cat out of the cake, no one but a mouse will want to eat them!

Thanks for the complement on my baskets. Stay tuned for future updates!

This thread is too funny, I'm really enjoying reading all the animal antics :teeth:

You will certainly enjoy the class!! I took all 3 courses several years ago and later on I worked at a Publix bakery as a decorator....even did some wedding cakes!! I started developing carpal tunnel though and that was one of the reasons I don't do it anymore. And a good way of testing a cake to see if it is done it to insert a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean it is done but if it comes out with anything on it(goo) it is not. Another way is to touch the top lightly with your fingers and if the cake springs back it is done but if you can tell where you put your fingers it will need to bake longer.

I nearly peed myself  reading between Sparx and Dana. :rotfl2: I'm just glad I wasn't drinking anything or I'd need a new laptop. :rotfl:
