When it comes to hotels, you can use a debit check card/reloadable card/credit card. Doesn't usually matter. I have worked at 3 different hotels. 2 chains hotels and 1 locally owned one. As a front desk/reservationist I can tell you I never asked a guest when they reserved a room (or even when they checked in) are you using your debit/check/credit card etc? The numbers begin the same (for example visa is 4...) so unless you are actually looking at the card you can't tell the difference. Also, as a general rule (unless it is an upscale hotel) they only guarantee the room (i.e. put the number in the computer but don't run it) with the card and only charge it if you no show. And no shows are only charged usually at peak seasons when the room is at 80-90% full. (yikes, sorry about the hotel tangent there)
My mom also recently went to texas to see my brother and they used his debit check card to rent a car (can't remember what chain it was)
I agree having a credit card/debit card is handy but I can understand why many don't have them.
