I am fairly new to this board, one or two posts, but have lurked for a while.

Background, I have tried every diet known to man. I have over 100 pounds to lose.

Today I started Atkins, tried it in the past, but I really want to succeed this time. I know I can do it, but I feel that if I lose some weight and people notice, they will also think, oh she'll gain it all back she always does.

Do you think you can be scared to lose weight? Because I am, I am afraid of failure and sucess.

Just wondered if anyone had any words of encouragement and insight.

MOM, I can't express to you how much you are in the right place. This is THE place.......... so many here have done what you are about to do and so many are doing it. This site is so wonderful. Reading your post, made me remember my first post here. I skimmed through some stories and posts and found one particular one that made me make up my mind. A woman ( no names mentioned ) who had lost over 100 pounds! I though wow! I could totally do this. I love this site because no matter what, if I have had a good day or a bad day, I can always come here and people will listen and respond! My advice to anyone new is to look through the journals and read about other people's eating plans, personal struggles, and exercise routines. Buddy up with someone if youd like or find comfort in everyone here. We have a wonderful group of people and we are all inthe same boat. whether we have just started or finsihed and everything in between.
goodluck, PM me if you'd like. we can talk.

Yes, I do believe that you can be afraid of success. Think about why you want to loose weight. Think deep down, what is driving you, what do you want, and what do you want to achieve. PLEASE focus on yourself, not what others say. You need to do it for yourself and your health. Who cares what other people think. In the end it is still about you~ as it should be. I had similar feelings, and then one day I just got fed up with feeling bad and embarassed all the time. I want so much more out of life and I finally came to the point that I am willing to do the work to get healthy. I wasn't ready before. Hang in there! As wiskband said, this is a great place to be! Please don't hesitate to come here for support! :flower1:

You have come to the right place for support. I find this board to be so inspirational and motivational. When I'm down, I just have to come over and read a few threads and I'm lifted back up again. I think deep down we are all afraid of failing. I lost approx. 50 pounds and unfortunately put it all back on. I am back now and will not give up and become discouraged. I will lose it again and I WILL NOT put it back on.

Keep positive thoughts floating through your head and know that you can do whatever it is you set your mind to. I suggest starting with small goals and don't look at the big goals as they can be overwhelming. Keep coming to the boards and I promise you'll get the support you need.

Sending PD your way. :wizard:

MOM, have you ever read Dr. Phil's book on weight loss. The first Key to weight loss is to lose the "stinking thinking". Who cares what others say about us? Are you doing something, are you putting forth an effort to drop the weight? If you are then you are doing the right thing and have nothing to question!! Tap into the Power of Positive Thinking!!

Another important thing is positive support and this is a great place to get it! Good luck, hope to see some of those weight loss rewards in your posts soon!

Hi there,
You've definately come to the right place! Wish is unlike no other support group I have seen. It's what has been able to allow me to reach my goal and come back to get there again after gaining 20lbs. It's what encouraged me to start and finish a half marathon a week ago Sunday. You can do it! But you can only do it when you are ready. When you are ready and you have the support level of WISH - You can do amazing things!

Thank you everyone for making me feel so welcome. I am two days with Atkins and it is going well so far. I am going to take one day at a time. Set small goals so thinking about losing 100 pounds will not be so intimidating.

I thought about what some said about not caring what others think, and you are right. I want to do this for myself and I am not going to care what others think or say. I saw Dr. Phils book in Target tonight but did not get it, but I will next time. I am always at Target.

Thank you for your words of encouragement, I look forward to sharing my experience with you and reading about yours.

Thank you again.

Sharon

Welcome Sharon! I WISH you all the best in reaching your goal! It appears that you are already off to a great start. Way to go getting through day 2! :cheer2:

Don't get discouraged Sharon. Look at other people's siggies. There are folks here who have lost what you need to lose. But it takes time, a least a couple of years, usually. But you have the rest of your life to do this, so don't rush or expect huge results immediately. We all say baby steps are the way to go, that way we can deal with the inevitable setbacks, and plateaus.

If I ever need motivation to continue onward, I just come to the WISH board and the WISH journals and read other people's stories. It really helps!

Good luck,
Jean

that this is a wonderful place.

You need to be in the right place emotionally to lose weight. I have gained and lost the same weight over and over again. I have tried every diet made, succeeded at most, but gained it back again. I lost 35 lbs on phen/fen over a years time, only to gain it all back within 8 months went I stopped taking it. So I am the queen of the weight loss cycle.

I finally decided, after getting up to 195 lbs (2 years after the birth of my second child), my mother said to me, among other things, that if (heaven forbid) something were to happen to me, my husband would collect my life insurance, take my children and move them back to central NJ, which is where he grew up and where his mother still lives. She asked me if I wanted my boys to be raised by my MIL. Now, don't get me wrong, she's a lovely woman and my boys love her, but I don't want her raising them instead of me. So I decided enough was enough.

Since I have often gained and lost weight, I was certainly concerned about what others would think about me losing weight (would they secretly be wondering when I would gain it back again) and how others view me, but the reality is, I have to do this for me. I have to get healthy and lose weight and make sure that I am not at risk for heart disease or other weight related issues.

So I commend you for realizing that you are ready to lose the weight. Do not think of the word "again" but just take the decision to lose and leave it at that. Do not look at the 100 lb loss, but instead look at it the way WW does, in 10% increments. Take your current weight and focus on losing 10% of your weight. That is a more managable number. Look forward only a short period at a time, rather than thinking about how long this might take to accomplish. Remember that every amount lost is wonderful, no matter how small.

Continue to come here and post. You will get a ton of support as you go.

Good luck.

Welcome to WISH! I just wanted to echo everyone else here and say you are without a doubt in the right place! Post often and ask for support or encouragement if you need it. Post about your successes - Join one of the challenges, be an active member here as we are all in the same boat and working toward the same goal!! ::yes::

Hi Sharon

Welcome to WISH. As someone to is trying to lose over 100 myself, I know it can be intimidating. As others have said, break it up into smaller chunks, and shorter timeframes. I started out with can I lose even 5 lbs. I have since gone to 25lb goals. These made good goals. Now that my weight loss has slowed down, I may go back to 10lb goals. You mentioned you had tried atkins once before. You need to ask yourself (no need to answer here) "why didn't it work the first time?" Depending on your answer, you may want to look into "South Beach Diet", "the Zone", etc (Check them out of the library instead of buying). I settled on South Beach because I didn't think I could cut the carbs as drastically as Atkins did in Induction. I have since moved to a hybrid South Beach/Atkins diet. It seems to be working for me. You need to ask yourself, is the on going weightloss phase something you can live on long term. We all are trying to make lifestyle changes, not go on short term diets.

I would also recommend adding some physical activity if you are not already doing some. For me, I walk three days a week. My weight loss slowed down and actually stalled for 3 weeks over the holiday. It wasn't until I started back walking that my numbers started down again.

Goodluck, keep us all posted on your progress. There are a great bunch of people here all striving for the same goal (to live a healthy life).
