I didn't know being a mascot was so dangerous

We were all just talking about that here at work! I bet that "Italian Sausage" never thought she'd wake up famous today! It's amazing what some people will do.

This was on the Today show. The guy has problems.

I'm embarrassed that one of our Pittsburgh Pirates would behave this way.:(

He should be fired and brought on up on Assault with a Weapon charges.

That's as bad as Dave Winfield intentionally hitting a seagull (and killing it) with a baseball when he played for the Jays. What are these guys thinking?? A case of too many balls to their heads perhaps??

I think it's a shame the ladies were hurt, and I'm glad that he was cited for disorderly conduct. But come on, the guy didn't mean to hurt them. He tapped a sausage, she lost her balance and fell. He shouldn't have tapped her, no doubt, but some folks are acting like he took a fence swing at her.

Hello????
A tap with a baseball bat to the back of the head?

Ummm, I think that would up set me!

Holycow

My only problem with the fact that he was only cited with disorderly conduct is that if a FAN had done that to a mascot or one of the players they would have thrown the book at them (as they should.) He should have been treated just like anyone else. Additionally MLB should step in and issue a punishment of their own.

Did you see it? It looked like at least a ground ball swing to me. She moved with the swing before she fell. I agree it wasn't as hard as he could, but it was certainly something that should be considered dangerous and wrong.

She had on a costume for God's sake - he didn't hit her in the head, he tapped the costume.

 It looked like a harder hit to me. So if the injury is not severe, that makes the action OK?

I watched the video numerous times. That did not look like a tap to me it looked like a hit.

It was a hit, not a full swing, but a hit. Also he felt no remorse after he did it. He laughed and went to sit down on the bench. He then slapped the leg of one of his teammates. IT was disgusting. No wonder Baseball and other major sports are losing fans.

I saw the video as well, and I'm sorry, but that wasn't a hit IMO.

I guess the "victim" agrees, seeing as she isn't interested in filing charges.

I'm with you AFR. I've seen the video about 10 times now and it looks like a tap. She had no head injuries at all. In fact the only injuries she had were scraped knees. The player said he was just playing around a little and certainly didn't mean for her to fall. He got charged and had to pay a small fine. That seems fair to me.

I just wanted to answer this:

So if the injury is not severe, that makes the action OK?

Where did I say the action was OK? I don't think he should have done it, and he has paid a fine for his actions. And in the real world, the severity of the injuries often decide the severity of the charges, so it does make a difference.

He has received punishment that I feel is adequate, unlike those that would apparently like to see the guy drawn and quartered during the 7th inning stretch...

I am not sure if you are implying that she ISN'T a victim by the quotation marks but if you are I would disagree. She's a young woman who was doing her job and participating in the races and was struck by this person. Imagine how embarrasing it was for her to fall in front of all those people, etc. I would say she most certainly is a victim. If she wants to file charges than good for her, maybe next time he'll think about it before he does something so stupid. He's a grown man and should have known what COULD have happened when he did it. He was lucky she wasn't hurt worse, in those big awkward costumes she easily could have been badly hurt when she fell. At Brewer games occassionally the visiting team will spray water or something of that nature at the sausages but intentionally hitting them is out of line. Additionally what kind of example is that for all of the kids at the game. It was an intentional act that he later laughed not only with his teammates but the umpire as well about. And as everyone knows a $400.00 fine for a MLB player is not really a punishment it's a slap on the wrist!
