Hey LURKER! I've missed you! Sorry that we'll miss each other this year :(
And by only 2 days!!! Well, with the economy like it is, I guess we should be glad to be able to go! Thanks for checkin' in!

Hey DISers, I'm still visiting friends, but had to check in with the DIS! Hope all is well - thanks for stopping by! :goodvibes

Gmax!!!!!!!!!!!!! what time is it ????

Hey DISers! I took some pics this weekend while visiting friends in South Carolina. So I'll use these for my May update!

These were taken on Sunday, going to their church, The Bible Way Church of Atlas Road.

It was their Communion Sunday, and they wear white.

Here's my friends' son and I in the car on the way to dinner.

Well that's it! Sorry I didnt do any close-ups. It was bad enough taking pics of MYSELF and trying not to get caught - imagine them catching me taking pics of my head!

When I washed my hair this weekend, none of my locs washed out! So hopefully soon they will all start to loc/firm up, so I don't have to worry about them unraveling when they get wet. Can you imagine how I'd look after getting off a water ride? :hippie:

While away, my friend took me to a health store, where I found Henna Color for hair. I'm going to try it this weekend. I've been watching LOTS of youtube videos by women who used it. Hopefully some color will show up. I hoping for a reddish-brown.

Well that's it! I hope you enjoyed the pics. I'll make sure to update this thread this weekend (after seeing Star Trek of course!), so you can see if the Henna worked! If anyone has any tips, please post! Thanks! :wave2:

I hope you and Mommy had a nice Mother's Day !!!

Looking good!!!

I have a story to share...

So, I took my girls into a Ultra or something like that where they sell beauty supplies... and they smelled a perm and asked about it. So I said, White girls get a perm to put curl in their hair and black girls get a perm to take the curl out of their hair... And in the next aisle this lovely lady of color said that she never heard a white lady know the difference between perms :lmao:

I told her that I grew up on the South Side of Chicago and know all the time/expense you ladies go through to have great hair, and I mentioned your thread and she was like... ooooh... that's a major commitment And she wishes you the best :thumbsup2:

GREAT Story! You explained it VERY well. My co-workers would always look at me confused when I'd say that I'd just got a perm. They couldn't understand why my hair wasnt curly!

Thanks for passing on the good wishes! It has been a huge committment, but I don't regret it! Thanks for telling her about this thread!

Well DISers, I'm supposed to update this thread, but I left my camera at my Mother's house. Hopefully this week I'll get it back, so you can see pics of my "Henna" attempt!

Well DISers, last weekend I tried using Henna to color my hair, since it's all natural. It's supposed to condition the hair, and leave it with a Copperish, Reddish-Brownish color.

IMG_4466.jpg
IMG_4467.jpg

I purchased the Henna from a Health Food store, when I visited South Carolina 2 weeks ago. According to a number of hair journals, and you tube videos, it's best to mix the Henna the night before and cover it. Here it is:

IMG_4463.jpg
IMG_4464.jpg

It looks and smells a bit like mud. Good thing I already knew what to expect!

After using a Clarifying shampoo to remove any build-up, I applied the Henna.

IMG_4476.jpg

IMG_4473.jpg
IMG_4471.jpg

Even though the directions said to only leave it on for one hour, I left it on for 3, since my hair is hard to color. Also, I read that some women even tie their hair up really well at night, and sleep with it on to insure a better stain.

I wrapped my head in Plastic Wrap, then added a warm towel, then placed a big shower cap on top.

IMG_4470.jpg

Well you probably guessed that it didn't work :( According to everything I read, most women did not see any results till the next day. Unfortunantly, I could barely see anything. Some women said that after the 3rd application they received their desired results. WELL, I'm done! I tried semi-permanent, and natural. Now I'm just gonna use a permanent dye - reddish brown. Since my hair is so hard to color, I figure that the dye will probably just give me the highlights I wanted anyway.

Even though my attempts so far have been unsuccessful, it's still been fun trying all these new things on my hair. In 2 weeks, I'll try the dye. Hopefully then I'll see some reults, without damaging my hair!

Thanks again for reading along! If you have any suggestions about coloring my hair, please feel free to post!

Hi,
Just catching up.

Sorry the henna did not work. :flower3:

I think your hair looks great the way it is.

Hi Glenda! :wave2:

I've been lurking 'round admiring your lovely locs. :teeth:

Anyway I wanted to post to advise you to be careful when you go with permanent color over the Henna. It can have negative results and end up orange or even fry.

Even natural Henna's can have adverse results. You may want to consult a professional, I'd hate to see anything happen to your hard work. :goodvibes

I've only tried henna on my skin before, trying to get those pretty, intricate little tattoos...never works for me either. It mostly looks like I have a skin disease. I've thought about the hair too, but it doesn't sound like that would go much better. Ah well, hopefully your next attempts go well.

Thanks for DeLurking! Thanks for the tips. There was a warning on the box against using it over the Henna. But since it did not show up, nor had no effect on the texture of my hair, I thought I would try it. Believe me, I do NOT want to mess up my either! Thank you so much!

Thank you! I'm surprised that the Henna didnt work on your skin. I've always wanted to get one at EPCOT in Morocco. I never thought it might NOT show up. Hmmm . . . if I do have some time I may try it when I go back! Thanks for posting!

Well DISers, I do have an update to post! I just uploaded some pics, and tonight I'll put it all together. So please come back! :surfweb: Thanks again for all the tips, and posts!

After a failed attempt at coloring my hair naturally, I decided to try a permanent color. After all, it would be great to have a little color for my next Disney trip! Here's what I used:

IMG_4529.jpg

I read the directions carefully. Since my hair seems to be resistant to color, I left it on about 10 mins longer than instructed.

IMG_4530.jpg
IMG_4532.jpg

I was really surprised after mixing the dye, that it was a deep purple, not red or burgundy since the color I wanted was Auburn.

IMG_4523.jpg
IMG_4522.jpg

IMG_4527.jpg

I thought I would use the entire bottle, but I stopped after my hair was nearly dripping with the dye. There was only a little left in the bottle. I then put a plastic cap on, so none of it would drip on me.

After 40 mins, I rinsed it out. It just BARELY shows up in the sunlight. But I can see it more clearly around my edges. Unfortunantly, I don't think it shows up at all in the pics, but here they are anyway . . .

IMG_4542.jpg

IMG_4544.jpg

So it seems that I would have to use something to bleach my hair first, so the color would show. I don't want to do that since I think it would weaken my hair. About week after I get back from my Disney trip, I'll try using a light brown, close to blonde, to see if it'll give me more visible results. In the meantime, I'm still doing my daily water spritz with Aloe and Vitamin E -and occasionaly moisterizing with Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I believe doing this will also help to replace any moisture the dye may have taken.

Thanks again for reading! I can't believe I have so many hits! So please post! Would be nice to hear from some of you, especially if you have any tips!

Cya!

I hope you are having a good holiday!!!:goodvibes

Thanks Antss. I have to work, so it'll be just another work day. But I guess in this economy, I should ne glad to have a job to go to! :thumbsup2

this is the first time I posted to this thread.. I just wanted to let you know...

I am liking these locs.. truly.. but then I am a HUGE fan of short twists on men and women of color. I just like the whole look. It looks good on you.

I wish my dh could do this.. unfortunately.. he would have a few twists here and a few twist there.. here a twist, there a twist.. but they would be few and far between on the top of his head ;)

Good Luck!

btw.. my dd-19 just did a beautiful carmel color on her hair it looks great with her skin tone, and she did a straightening product several weeks later... EEEEEK! but thank goodness she did not have too much damage..

Hey! Thanks for posting, glad you like my hair!

Did your daughter color her hair herself? If so, PLEASE tell me what she used, especially if she did it over dark hair!

Thanks! :surfweb:
