I cooked the giblet bag inside the turkey

Oh no!! :rotfl2: I've done that too. Did you still eat the turkey?

Ok, I have a dumb question, why wouldn't you eat the turkey? I know what the giblet bag is and that it is in the inside of the turkey's cavity, but how would it affect the turkey?

I Googled and found this.

Accidental Cooking in Packaging
Some giblets are paper wrapped before being inserted into the poultry body cavity. In this case, there would be no concern if the giblets are accidentally cooked inside the bird to a safe temperature.

If giblets were packed in a plastic bag, and the bag has been altered or melted by the cooking process, do not use the giblets or the poultry because harmful chemicals may have leached into the surrounding meat. If the plastic bag was not altered, the giblets and poultry should be safe to use as long as the meat is fully cooked.

It's the whole cooking plastic thing. It is supposed to leak chemicals into the food.

I did that once. I could not find the gut bag to save my life and finally was convinced it had just been forgotten.

The turkey tasted extremely strong, but didn't really know what was wrong with it. Then, after cutting up the turkey for storage after the meal, I found a baked paper bag full of cooked guts. :rolleyes2

I did the exact same thing the first time I cooked a turkey for my inlaws. I knew it should be there but just could not find it. MIL never missed an opportunity to make me feel like an idiot for it. :headache:

How did you make gravy with out the giblets?

Never seen them in plastic, always paper.

Willams - Sonoma Turkey Gravy Base + one jar of milk = perfect gravy every time!

Don't feel bad. My mom made a quiche and forgot to put the eggs in it!:rotfl2::rotfl: The kids loved it! Cresent rolls, sausage and cheese! Maybe its a new tradition!

Giblet gravy is gross. My brothers' girlfriend made giblet gravy at Thanksgiving and it was disgusting. A gray, gloopy, gelatinous mass.

I've done it once.:wave2:

Almost twice: I cooked a turkey breast just for the two of us on Thanksgiving. I didn't expect for a giblet bag that time, but I saw it as I was seasoning the underside of the breast.

I did that when cooking my first turkey too. We laugh about it now. :)

I've done it before.... nobody got sick, but the bag was paper. And it certainly wasn't my first turkey. Not sure where my brain was!
