Also I need to state that I HATE when everyone says that I ruin the steak like that...isn't taste subjective to everyone?

This is my mom's fault...when she had me even as a kid she would cut EVERYTHING open when I was younger and say make sure it's not pink - if it is it's not cooked. (80's paranoia about food poisiong or something that was going around)

I just don't like the taste!!!! It's so soft too! Am I weird or do I have fellow weirdos!

NO WAY

My father always insisted on well-done beef so that's how it was served. Yes, we all had to have it that way. He couldn't stand the sight of pink on anybody else's plate either.

It wasn't until I was a late teen that I had it any other way. Now I like it medium rare. Older brother always liked it well-done too. So there are other weirdos. :goodvibes

(I don't think it's weird.......however you like it is fine with me.)

You just don't care for the taste of blood. Any time meat is served with pink juice running out of it, there will be a slight coppery taste from the uncooked blood. Nothing technically wrong with that; but not everyone likes that flavor, any more than everyone likes something like Cilantro.

FWIW, you probably didn't realize the difference easily as a child, but if your mother was commenting on safety, the odds are that the meat you were eating at the time was pork. Starting in the 1960's the USDA warned us not to eat rare-cooked pork because of the risk of getting Trichinellosis by ingesting microscopic larvae along with the undercooked meat. There was never any such warning in regard to beef. (But I suppose some people never realized that cows don't carry it.) These days, commercially-raised pork is mostly all safe, too; the most common way to get Trich in the US today is from eating wild-caught boar or bear meat.

There were some worries about beef due to mad-Cow Disease for awhile in the 90's, but it was never a serious concern in the US food chain. While the prions that cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease are unfortunately not destroyed by thorough cooking, they also are NOT present in the parts of a cow/steer that Americans normally eat. Only the animals' nerve tissue may harbor them; that is, meat from the brain or spinal column area. (There was at the time a local traditional "brain-sandwich" dish served where I live, that was made from deep-fried beef brain. Now it is only available with pork brain instead.)

Yes, I do think you're weird. And yes it does ruin the meat. Sorry, just the way beef is. ;-)

I love my steak seared on the outside, bloody on the inside. I think it ruins steak to cook it past medium rare, but I am especially heartbroken when someone does it to a really good ribeye or filet. Those cuts should just be rare. Sirloin lends itself better to well-done.

I prefer my steaks Medium, hamburgers medium well (at minimum).
DH preferred his steaks Medium rare---he is no longer allowed to get them that way, only Well Done. Doctor's orders.
(He can't have sashimii or seared tuna anymore either)

But why does it "ruin the meat"?

For those of us that eat steak medium rare (at the minimum), it is overcooked. A well done steak is gross to me.

I do eat hamburgers well done NOW due to obvious food temp issues. But before all that came out I used to eat them with pink in the middle.

That being said, however you want to eat your steak is your business. If you like it well done, go ahead and eat your overcooked steak.....LOL.

I used to eat meat well done and over the years came around to medium/medium rare. For me, it does taste better cooked to a lower temperature...it is much more tender, juicy, and not dried out.

I don't think your a weirdo, but I do feel sorry for you.

Any steak that I have to use a knife to cut is just beef to me.

There is nothing like the taste of a good steak cooked med raw or raw that you can cut with a fork. yummy.

I don't think you're weird at all. Taste is subjective and "ruined" is just an opinion.

I like my own steaks medium, and burgers medium-well.

I don't think your that weird... my husband is the same way.

However there are some types of steak that don't work as well when cooked that way. That may be what some mean by ruined. For us it changes what types of cuts we buy. My husband even agrees on this. Its why he likes cube steak better then prime rib. Prime rib completely cooked through is very tough. So we tend to get cuts of steak that can be served how both of us like it.

Another example is I would never pay at a nice restaurant to get my husband Kobe beef... unless its a burger. You can't tell the difference at that point. Most places don't want to cook that past medium.

I prefer mine somewhere around Med to Med well, partially depending on how much I trust the place to handle and cook meat correctly. We have even both gotten pretty good at timing cooking of our steaks (him in the grill me in the broiler) so that we both get it how we like it.

Even when we eat at my parents my Dad knows to cook one piece more and sets it aside for him.

I also like it well-done. I always order my burger and when I very rarely order steak it's well-done. I actually had a waiter argue with me that I shouldn't order my steak that way. I've also ordered things well-done and they come out bloody. I'll still eat it but it is kinda annoying lol. I also love my hot dogs on the grill to be burned and black.

I like steaks medium rare. When they are cooked past that, the texture changes, the meat is drier and you lose a lot of the flavor. Weird, I don't know about that since you are use to eating your meat that way, but a good steak, cooked properly has a much different taste medium rare vs well done. The quality of beef matters too. If you are not eating good beef, it doesn't matter how it's cooked, it just doesn't taste right anyway.

I do cook hamburgers to well done though--no pink in those.

This has been my experience, too. Meat that isn't overcooked and dry tastes so much better!
