After reading the abs diet book I decided to try it and everything is going well but I am not sure about some of the recipes. If someone out there has done or is doing the Ab's diet please respond.

Thanks

Kim

I can't say I strictly do the ABs diet but I have the book and use the shopping list and smoothie recipes. The way I look at recipes in general is to take what I like from it and alter it to make it for me, like replacing sauces with spices.

I do the same thing- change, leave out, replace, omit and add what I like to make things I think will work.

My question would be about the smoothie/shakes. I made my first attempt at making a shake yesterday and I was a little confused about the process. The smoothie I made called for 3/4 cup of nuked oatmeal and the quaker packet had instructions that called for 1/2 cup per 1 serving so I really wasn't sure about the 3/4. It said 3/4 cup oatmeal nuked in water, no amount for the water?!? Anyways the shake was horrible so I assumed I must have done it wrong. If you know the answer to this please let me know. Thanks.

I am pretty sure they were calling for unflavored oatmeal. I buy the big container instead of the little packets. That way you can take out the measuring cup and get whatever you need. The small packets aren't really good because the size might be something different than you need, like you discovered. That may also throw off the flavor if it was flavored but should have been unflavored.

As far as how much water I would just do a conversion. See what the serving size is and call that x. The just do (1/2 * 3/4)/x and you will know how much water you need.

I like to use frozen fruit and fruit juice along with the unflavored oatmeal.

Make sure to use a blender, trying to use a shaker to mix anything with oatmeal is a bit brutal.

I guess I used the wrong wording, I do have the big container of unflavored quaker oats, I just wasn't sure if I used the correct amount of water, I did measure out 3/4 cup of the quick oats and on the water sort of guestimated...I guess the consistency just wasn't what I was used to. I made a smoothie with 3/4 cup nuked oatmeal, 1/3 cup frozen strawberries, 2tbs plain yogurt, ground flaxseed, and ice cubes, it was awful! Are they usually awful and you have to just tough it out?? I think I need to try some of the other ones before I give up. Thanks for your advice and good luck.

Thanks
Kim

What did you use for the liquid? If you didn't add anything other than the water from the oatmeal that might be what was wrong. Using water in smoothies I find makes them very bland. I use 100% fruit juice which adds some flavor. The texture of the smoothie you described would probably be a bit strange because of the oatmeal and the ground flax. I don't use flax in smoothies.

I cooked the oatmeal in about 1 cup water, but other than that the recipe didn't call for any more liquid, other than the little bit of yogurt, I will try it again maybe add either juice or ff milk.
Thanks

My dh and I started this diet but more as an eating style. I love the concepts he tries to teach you and how your body works. I have followed many of the recipes but have found the need to tweak a few of them. You can find more recipes online at the men's health website.

AS far as the shakes, I enjoy a few of them. The oatmeal one was my least favorite. I think the oatmeal in the container is not an instant one. Therefore it doesn't come out in the consistancy needed. But to be honest with you, if it did I don't think the shake would be any good.

I'm glad you posted this because I've been looking to see if it anyone is doing the ABS diet!

This is exactly what I am doing- using this as an eating style, and using some of the recipes with a few minor adjustments. I am also using The Biggest Loser 30 jump start, it has a lot of great recipes and tips as well. Basicly I am trying incorporate as many of the power foods into my diet as I can. I don't know if you have seen the recipe for Ab's diet trail mix but it has been a staple in my house since I bought the first book in 2005, it has 4 power foods and it tastes great.

I tried a few of the other shakes and they were a lot better, I especially like one called PB&J.

I LOVE the pb&j one!!! I don't have the trail mix recipe. Is it in the book?

One thing I know for sure is how expensive it is to be on this "diet" all the fruits and veggies...:headache: . . . but it's worth it right?

I know, I have been spending A LOT of money on food too!! I always think to myself when I am paying, no wonder so many americans are over weight, they can't afford to eat healthy.

I have three abs diet books- The Abs Diet, The Abs Diet for Women, and The Abs Diet Eat Right Every Time Guide. The abs trail mix is in the eat right every time guide. I will give you the recipe:

Abs Diet Trail Mix (powefoods: 4)

1 cup whole almonds
1 cup pecan halves
1/3 cup plain oats
2 tbs. honey
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 cup craisins original or flavored
1 large packet of dried apricots
cooking spray

Preheat oven to 350. Place nuts and oats in a bowl and spray evenly with cooking spray (about 3 shots). Drizzle with 1 tbs. honey and add cinnamon, stirring to coat. Spread evenly on a pan and toast for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once they've cooled, stir in the other tbs. of honey and the dried fruit. Divide into 1/4 cup servings and place them into zip top bags.
Makes 9 to 10 servings.

Per serving: 170 calories, 3g protein, 18g carbohydrates, 9g fat (0 saturated), 3g fiber, 0mg sodium.

The minor adjustments I made to this recipe is instead of whole almonds I use plain sliced almonds and instead of apricots which we don't like, we add two of the mini boxes of raisins.

My favorite way to eat this is to sprinkle it on top of yogurt or make fruit and yogurt parfaits with a spoonful or two on top. Stonyfield farms organic fat free french vanilla yogurt, then a few raw blueberries and strawberries layered and this trail mix on top. It really is good.

I really recommend the abs diet eat right every time guide because it has lots more recipes, and tells you what brands are the best choice and it also tells you the best choice at some of the common restaurants when your in a pinch.

Wow, glad I stumbled over here. My friends trainer is actually running the 2010 1/2 with us so he's made it his own personal goal to get the both of us in shape and healthy and training correctly. As a gift, he gave us both the Abs Diet for Women book two days ago. Haven't started reading it yet but I plan to start this weekend. It looks great!

It's definitely worth the read. You will learn so much about your body. Some things I skipped over...but it's such a great "common sense" book about how you should eat!!

Thanks for the recipe and the book title Kim. I'm going to look it up! I think this is a great place to share recipes we've tried. I've tried a few of them and they came out great!

Ok everyone, I've finally finished reading the whole book and I'm ready to go food shopping and try the food plan. Any words of wisdom for the shakes and smoothies? Do you guys use the whey protein powder? And how's the oatmeal coming along?

Favorite recipes? Any that you despise? :)

OK just going to add in my 2 cents since I started today!

Tried the PB&J smoothie for lunch and liked it a lot. I actually used a little too much whey powder so it should be even better next time around. Tried the 'Two Chicks' salad for lunch and am satisfied still. I feel like this is a LOT of food to be eating!
