I am very afraid for my daughter - Update #56 All O.K.

Try to stay away from the Internet. I'll keep her in my thoughts.

In 2002, during a routine eye exam, my eye doctor found my optic nerve heads to be "robust" and suspected a brain tumor. Once that was (quickly) eliminated as an issue, the opthamologist tried every trick in the book to explain why they looked weird. His determination was that I was just weird, but that there was nothing wrong.

I hope this is the case for your daughter.

Hugs, Denae. There are two things that are not your friend as a mom: Google, and weekends. Combined they are even worse. My DH and my mother both have threatened on occasion to disconnect my internet.

I am sending good thoughts that everything turns out to be nothing.

Thanks everyone. :flower3:

I am going to use whatever resources I have to get DD seen as soon as possible next week. I will keep you posted.

Aww, I can only imagine. I agree with everyone else, stay away from google. Your stress will only upset your daughter and the idea is not to make her worry right? :)

She and you have my thoughts and prayers that nothing serious is wrong. :)

Hopefully it will all be fine and I'm sorry you are scared. I had a strange diagnosis with my eye when I was a couple of years older than your DD. The eye doctor had my mom a bit freaked out. It turned out to not be anything bad at all and nothing I would really notice had I not been told.

When I was about your daughter's age, an eye doctor thought I might have something serious wrong with my eyes as well. After more intensive exams, my very worried mom was told there was nothing wrong with my eyes.

I will pray for the same outcome for your darling little girl. :wizard:

Denae: you, your DD and your entire family are in my prayers. Keep us unformed when you know more. :grouphug:
Hang in there. Hopefully you'll get better news when all is said and done.

:grouphug:

While Google can be helpful, sometimes it can also cause more stress. I had an issue at my last eye appointment where the doctor thought she saw something that could be problematic. Of course it was a Friday so she told me what she "thought" it was and they made an appointment for me for the following Monday. I went home and right away starting looking on the internet. Bad idea. I was stressed out, crying and a mess all weekend. Luckily the second doctor did more tests and everything was okay.

I know it's hard not to look, but for your own sanity and peace of mind, try to limit the searching.

Hope everything goes okay for your daughter

The same thing happened to me. First Dr. told me they saw something, second specialist said it was nothing.

When my oldest son was born, I was told he had a heart murmer (SP?) and sickle cell. We raced to Childrens Hospital in Boston to see 2 specialists for testing and then was told he did not have either. He had no heart issues at all and had a trait of the sickle cell disease, which did not require any treatment and he will live a normal, healthy life. I just dropped him off at college this morning!

Good luck with your daughter. Ill say a prayer for her tonight.

I'm really sorry this is going on and I hope it turns out that your little one is fine. My prayers are with you.

Here's a small update -

The optometrist sent over DDs information as promised, and it was at the opthalmologist's office at 8AM yesterday morning. The earliest I could get an appointment is September 28th. I asked the appointment scheduler to talk to the doctor to see if she needed to be seen sooner than that. He has sent an email but has not heard back. Another doctor in the office reviewed the information and said she should be seen sooner, but we are waiting for the pediatric opthalmologist to concur. He only works on Mondays. Argh!

I called the optometrist, who doesn't come in until Wednesday. I want to know how quickly she thought DD needed to be seen.

I called DD's pediatrician who really put me at ease. She said if there was something terribly wrong with DD, there would be other symptoms. She saw DD in June and she was perfectly healthy then. She also said she would make time this week to see DD just to make sure, and to make me feel better, if I wanted her to. I don't want to alarm DD unnecessarily and will wait to hear back from the opthalmologist.

So I am in a holding pattern right now, at least until the end of the month. It seems like a lifetime away!

Thanks everyone for your prayers and good thoughts.

Denae

If he doesn't get back to you soon or doesn't concur, can you get a referral for another specialist? Only working on Mondays is really limiting!

Keeping your DD and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Yeah, that is what I am looking into. There are several other opthalmologists in the practice, and I don't have a problem with her seeing one of them. My pediatrician said that if she thinks it's very urgent she will have the on call opthalmologist see her when she is at her office, or she will press to have her seen earlier by someone else.

Waiting is so hard! I do agree with the follow up, but also do agree with the fact that if it were alarming, they would want to more expeditious with the process.
Hang in there and be positive. You and your DD are in my thoughts and prayers!

Is he only in that office on Mondays? What does he do the other four days a week? Does the practice have other locations which may have an appointment available sooner?

My DD9 sees a phenomonal ENT who is only in the office convenient to us two afternoons a week. The other three afternoons he splits between two other locations and in the mornings he does surgeries or teaches at the med school.

Sometimes it's difficult to get an initial appointment and there's a really long waiting period, but if you're willing to go to any location, you may be able to get in sooner. Just a thought. Perhaps this is an option for you.

Praying it's nothing. I know how you feel though about the waiting...I had a breathing test that indicates a POSSIBLE restrictive lung disease in addition to my asthma. Restrictive lung diseases are pretty scary and of course, I'm googling like crazy. I have to wait until the 21st for a specialist.
