It's not very often that i lose my rag, but today has taken the biscuit!

Came home yesterday for my lunch ( i only work a mile away) and found that there are three forsale boards screwed into my front garden fence. We live in a courtyard of 4 houses and 10 apartments and just because our house is at the front they have plonked them on our fence without even asking us.
I rang them to ask them to come and take them down and they said that they would.

DH just rang me to say that they have been back and taken them down and now they have trampled all over the garden, broken a set of Christmas lights that were on the fence and rescrewed the boards into the internal face of the fence!

I have just rang to speak to the manager - who guess what isn't there and the woman i spoke to said that she didn't think the fence was ours and that she would get the men to come back again, I told her that she would be recieving a bill for the damaged fence, the lights and the plants and that if they are not down by 5pm when I get home that i will be taking them down myself and they will not be getting them back. Apparently the manager will be back in 10 minutes and he will be calling me back but we shall see.

I am so angry that I could burst.

Any advise on what to do in this sutuation? It wouldn't be so bad if they had come and asked us if we minded before hand. AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey I don't blame you, they should have done the decent courteous thing and asked. :grouphug: Hope you've calmed down and got it all out of your system.
See what the manager says, but they should pay for the damages they did, that's the least they could do. Lets us know what happens.
Hope you feel better. Cheer up it's nearly christmas! Here have some of these :goodvibes

I would go and take some photos of the damage just in case the manager decides to be unhelpful.

Then you have evidence and the option of taking it further if you want to.

Don't let it get you down too much, it's Christmas after all :bounce: :teeth:

Trouble is most estate agents contract out their sign posting to another company - I would charge them for the advertising space as well!

DH said that too! £50 per board per week, something tells me that they would soon take them down!

That is just plain in-considerate!!! Common sense should tell them even if the fence was NOT yours that it did belong to someone and they should ask permission before putting up signs. As for the damage, that is going way too far. They need to pay for what they have done. Bottom line. Let us know how things work out for you.

Alan's suggestion of taking photos is excellent - if you have a camera that can print the date on the photo that would be good, and perhaps get an independent person maybe another neighbour? Not family) to witness the damage.

I would not retain their signage as this could result in who did what first - if you do, it gives them ammo to counter-complain.

Give them the opportunity to put things right for you, and then if you have no luck, you can take them to the small claims court for repayment of any damage you have suffered.

well, this turned in to a right palava over christmas, as nothing was done about the signs I decided to take them down and then give them back to the shop. It turned out that as well as treading on the lights they also screwed through a set of LED lights that were on the fence - these had non replaceable bulbs so were ruined. We showed this to the man from the estate agents and he gave us the number of the contractor who puts up the signs, we rang them to find that they also then re contract it out to another bloke. We rang him and he was extremely rude and shouted down the phone at DH!
I said we would just leave it but DH arranged to meet the bloke at 10am on christmas eve to sort out the trouble, he came and took his signs away and didn't even bother to see us or the estate agent. Then all of a sudden the estate agent got extremley apolagetic and told us to buy some more lights and he would pay for them. This has now happened. I don't think we will use them when selling our house though!!

sometimes even when you get a satifactory result its just not good enough and doesnt make up for all the stress caused by the situation.

poor you

OOER!
I am wondering if the estate agent is liable anyway, whether they've sub-contracted or not! It would seem so given the sudden apologies and offer to pay etc.

I think the estate agent will be re-considering who they use too!

Anyway, I'm glad you have been re-imbursed for the damage!
