Belle5's childhood experience is exactly why people need to think through their 'surprises'...
If that experience is still a strong memory for her all these years later, it tells you that the trauma/crisis wasn't worth the wonderful surprise at the end of it all.
It's important to keep the focus on what's best for the kids, and put aside the disappointment the OP must be feeling...
