I actually ordered from Beach and got the 2 lens kit w/2G memory card for $549. Free shipping. Amazon has the Sigma 30mm/1.4 for $399 and I might pick that up as well.

Congrats. You are going to have fun with it. I my D80 and my 50mm 1.8 its a really great lens for $100-120, if it will work with the D40 I can't remember. I think it does because I use it with auto or manual on my D80 but I've heard some lenses are not compatiable with the D40s.

Can't wait to see some shots with that 30mm 1.4 I may get that one next. But I also want a good macro.

Unfortunately, the AF on the 50mm doesn't work on the D40...hence the reason I am getting the 30mm. I am excited beyond belief .

All i can say is have fun reading the manual.......longest time of my life, all i wanted to do was go play with it, but if I didn't read it, then i'd never learn it all! Congrats on going Nikon too!!

Now you are scaring me. With the D40, I grabbed the 18-55 and the 55-200 lenses. I am really itching for the the 18-200vr, but since I had to get the kit lens regardless, I figured I should spend the extra $70 for the 55-200 until I can get my fingers on the 18-200vr. Should I wait on the 30mm??

There is a thread here on the photo board just for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Its not all that old so it should be easy to find.

I have one and love it. There are a number of regulars here who have it and have had great success with it, especially at WDW.

I have the 50mm f/1.8 and really like it. It is sharp as a tack. A little on the long side for digital, thus I also got the 30mm f/1.4 (though its a few hundred more). I love using it as a portrait lens.

I got my D40 a few months ago and found a website that is very informative on simple to understand instructions for the D40 menus and functions. The website is kenrockwell.com and click the link that says recommended cameras. From there you cant miss the info on the D40. Good luck and hope to see some pictures soon.​

Thanks, Jeff. Subscription added! So my short (but expensive) list comprises the 18-200vr and the 70-300vr. Of course, that means I am ordering the Sigma today.
