Being so new, I am really confused. Here's my story....

Bought at OKW with a Dec. UY 330 points. 300 points from 2003 also received.. So far, so good.

I want to book a stay at OKW for 12/18-12/27. (based upon availability, I know). That will come out of my 2003 points I was told. Okay, got it. That will leave approx. 150 points remaining .

If I want to book a trip for this summer (again based on avail.), will those points come out of my 2003 allotment or will I have to borrow against the points coming 12/2004? If I have to borrow out of my 2004 allotment, what do I do with the remaining 2003 points? And do they expire, and if so, when??

I am so confused and I am just starting out!!!!!!

If you have a December use year and the first reservation you make will be this December, then you should bank all of your 2003 points. If you don't bank them, they will expire on November 30 if they go unused this year. Your deadline to bank 100% of your 2003 points is May 31. If you were to use half your points before November 30, then you could bank half your points before August 31. Banked points can't be returned, so make sure you won't be using them before December 1 before you make this decision. Member services should send you a Member's guide that explains banking and borrowing. Now, once the points are banked, tell them you want to use up your banked points for your upcoming reservations. This way, your leftover 2004 points will be current in their use year, and may be banked as need be.

I'm sorry, your question confused me.

Caskbill is going to post this super cool little thingy that shows what dates a particular use year's points are valid through.

All your banked or borrowed points should be used first. If I get this right, your '03 points are banked into '04 giving you 330 current and 300 banked on 12/1, 150 go to you vacation, now you have 150 banked and 330 current.

Any vacation from that vacation till 11/30/05 will use those 150 banked points first(you must confirm that) and use the 330 points as needed.

If your next vacation isn't till 12/1/05, your banked points are useless since they expired at midnight 11/30/05 and your current points are also usless unless you banked them according to the banking guidelines.

You first need to review your banking and borrowing deadlines and get to know and understand them.

After figuring out exactly how many points the December trip will use, you should bank that number of points from 2003 so you can use them in December 2004. It sounds like it will be 150. When you make the reservation, tell the MS that you want to use the banked points from 2003.

That will leave you with 150 more 2003 points. If you use all of those 150 non banked points this summer, then all of your 2003 points will be gone. If you have some left over, you will need to bank them. Doing it this way won't cause you to have to borrow points for this summer and keeps your 2004 points in tact.

I think you need to clarify or check with MS to see if your 12/03 points are current or already banked into the 12/04 use year.

If the 12/03 points were already banked then, yes, you will have to borrow from 12/04 for any 2004 summer trips. Left over banked points from 12/03 after your December 2004 trip will have to be used before 11/30/05 or they will expire. If you don't plan on going back to WDW or any of the other DVC properties before they expire, you have a few options. Use them up with the concierge collection closer to home; give them away to friends or to charity; or try to rent them out. Can you deposit banked points with II exchange? That may be another option.

If the 12/03 were NOT banked yet. Use them first for your summer 2004 trip, bank the rest and use them for your 12/04 trip. If you have and banked points from 12/03 left after your 12/04 trip, then see above paragraph.

Thank you all for your responses. The points from 2003 were not banked as of yet. I am hoping to get into MS system by Monday, to book our trips.

Your explanations really helped clear things up for me. :D Thanks again!

I think Dec. use years are confusing anyway! Since your 2003 points didn't go into effect until the last month of the year, you are actually using 2003 points for trips most of 2004. If you are still planning a trip for this summer, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

As Rich said I would, here's a little use year chart to help you understand. Think I'll make the official title of these charts as 'super cool little thingy':p

Glad I've got cut-and-paste down.

OK, for a December use year, your chart looks like this:

Use Year.....Vacation Dates.......................Points Available
2003.....Dec 1, 2003 through Nov 30, 2004.....300 (minus anything you bank)
2004.....Dec 1, 2004 through Nov 30, 2005.....330 (plus any from 2003 banked)
2005.....Dec 1, 2005 through Nov 30, 2006
2006.....Dec 1, 2006 through Nov 30, 2007
2007.....Dec 1, 2007 through Nov 30, 2008
2008.....Dec 1, 2008 through Nov 30, 2009
2009.....Dec 1, 2009 through Nov 30, 2010

and so on.

Points for a vacation must come from the use year that the vacation covers. For example, a vacation this summer must come from your 2003 use year. A vacation this next December must come from your 2004 use year.

You can bank points from any use year into the following use year, but only once. Example: You can bank your 2003 points into 2004, but you cannot again bank those same points into 2005. You could bank your regular 2004 points into 2005.

I want to book a stay at OKW for 12/18-12/27. (based upon availability, I know). That will come out of my 2003 points I was told. Okay, got it. That will leave approx. 150 points remaining .
That's incorrect. An OKW stay for this coming December will have to come out of your 2004 points. NOTE: 2004 points can be any of the following: 1. Regular 2004 allotment, 2. Banked 2003 points, 3. Borrowed 2005 points.

You said the 2003 points have not yet been banked, so here's what you do. Make your summer reservation and use your regular 2003 points. Then bank whatever 2003 points you have remaining into 2004.

Next make your Dec 2004 reservation. Have MS first use all the remaining banked 2003 points, then use however many additional 2004 points are needed to complete the reservation.

In the event you cannot get your summer request, then you should be careful. Your 100% banking deadline is May 31st. You have two options: Waitlist and use your regular 2003 points and hope you get the reservation before May 31, or bank the 2003 points, then waitlist and have them borrow 2004 points if the waitlist comes through. In this case, then for the December ressie have them use only the banked 2003 points. This will leave you with approximately 150 banked points in your 2004 use year that you would need to use prior to Nov 30, 2005.

Call MS right away, those 2003 points must be banked if they are not going to be used until after your new use year Dec 2004, minus any you use for your summer vacation. First things first, call and make reservation for summer, then bank the balance, for you to use in the next year which for you is Dec 2004. I would really get on this because you are runnning out of time to bank at 100 percent, unless there was some special provision in your sale contract, but I doubt it. Don't let this matter slide.

Thank you one and all, especially Caskbill. :) Your explanation was just what I needed (and no, I am not a blonde). Thank you so much for making this newbie understand this whole new concept. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

You first need to review your banking and borrowing deadlines and get to know and understand them.

Concerning the above, is there really a "borrowing deadline"?

I thought you could always borrow from next year's allotment whenever you choose so long as the points are there (you just can't return the points once they are borrowed). Is there an actual borrowing deadline that I am not aware of? Maybe I am taking the above statement too literally.

There are no 'borrowing' deadlines. Borrowing only occurs at the time you make an actual reservation, and you can only borrow the number of points needed to complete the reservation. Unlike banking, where you can bank any number of points at any time (subject to specific percentage deadlines), borrowing is done only to make the reservation.

There are no conditions except that you borrow only what is necessary. You would not for example borrow ahead 300 points from next year, then start planning how to use them. What you do is plan and make the reservation with MS and they will borrow the points as needed.

You could call today, make a reservation, and borrow 50 points to complete it. You could then call again next month, make another reservation, and borrow 150 points for it, and call again a month later and make a 3rd reservation, and borrow points as needed.

Hope this helps
