I would like a 6 to 8 person tent. We will be using it primarily to go beach camping at Assateague Island, so I am leaning towards a dome style tent. Any opinions? oh & waterproofis very important! haha!

We have a cabelas brand tent. We of course purchased it from cabelas. It is called a two room cabin. 10x16. Very easy to put up, waterproof, and it is a three season tent. We love it. We fit two queen sized air matresses, a portable potty, along with luggage and with our family of five and dog inside comfortably with alot of room let over. We would reccommend this to everyone. The reviews are top notch. I hope this helps and good luck in your search. P.S. Very affordable tent at $259.99.

We tent camped for years before just getting a pop up this past winter... the last 4 years we have used a 14x16 tent from Target. It is a cabin style tent but slept 6 of us and all of our gear comfortably- not to mention it withstood a Florida thunderstorm with torrential downpours with close to no problems. Even though it isnt a dome style- I love this tent! We still set it up when we go on long trips to use for storage/changing room :thumbsup2

I love talking about tents. The boys and I use a 12 person Eureka Copper Canyon1512 (it's 15'x12'). There is massive amounts of room, but it's a cabin, not a dome. It's super-easy to put up, but I have 3 teenaged boys who do most of the work (while I sit on my chair, sip some fruity alcoholic beverage, and yell directions... "No, not THAT way!" "Oh, for crying out LOUD, don't put that there!" "Holy SMOKES, how many times do I have to tell you?!"... really a rather delightful time for all of us :rolleyes1). I got it from Cabela's, and it was around $350, but worth it, in my eyes.

We also use cot bunks, which absolutely saves on loads of space, as well.

And there you have it.

I see domes tents mentioned a lot-are they preferred over a "cabin" style tent? If so why? I was considering a cabin style to have the higher height.

We have a Cabelas dome tent, forget the model name. Outfitter? It is pretty much near their top of the line, and I would bet the most expensive dome they have. Ours is an 8 person with fiberglass poles. They now sell it with either fiberglass if you want to save cost, or aluminum if you want to save weight. It is a 6 pole dome with three that meet in the center, and three that support around the side walls. It has almost 7 feet of height in the center. It is probably close to 20 years old. It has weather a LOT! We had it set up in a bad spot during a downpour. We came back and it was floating in a foot of water. We opened the windows, pulled the gear out, picked it up and moved it to higher ground and NOTHING was wet.

When we got ours, an optional Alaskan Vestibule was available. It has been great. It attaches to the fly in front of the door and is about 5' high and 8 foot long. It is horseshoe shaped, has screen sides on both sides and a rain fly that zip down over them to seal it off. We put a porta potti at the far end of it and love having it instead of night time runs to the bathroom.

I think it is preference. Along with the style of camping, wilderness vs. car camping.

I am interested in this tent. Can you explain it to me? I know it is a cabin style. Is it a tent connected to a floorless screen room? How many can sleep in the tent area? Have you encountered any heavy rain & how did it hold up?

We used to have a columbia Squall Ridge dome tent & we loved it, but we were lucky to have never had rain, so I am not sure how the columbia tents do in the rain....
