So, I got my NEA Mastercard statement today and it has a $29.00 late fee attached for not paying last month. The problem is that I DID pay...$100! I called and they adamantly tell me that they never received a payment. I then went online to Commerce Bank where I do all of my online banking. I noticed that the $100 was sent to the WRONG credit card...one that I rarely use anymore! I call them and they tell me that I have to contact that credit card to see IF they will send me a refund check. What the heck???! It was THEIR mistake, not MINE plus I am now out $29 for the late fee!

I swear that these past few days have gotten worse and worse. I feel like crawling into a cave somewhere and becoming a hermit!

My discover card sent me a letter saying that everyones interest rate was going up. That ticks me off. I also saw an interview with Rep. Barney Frank (he represents half of the city I live in) saying he received a call from one of his constituents who had gotten a letter from capital one. In the letter she was told that due to the economic climate in her area and high unemployment rate they would not be able to issue her a credit line. Now that is total bs. He called a cap1 lobbiest (yes, lobbiest can be of help sometimes) and the company recinded the policy but the fact that they think they can deny credit to someone because of where they live is bogus.
...and yes, banks suck. I know, I work for one.

Try calling your NEA Mastercard and explaining the situation. Sometimes credit card companies will dismiss a late fee for a customer who has always paid on time. Never hurts to try.
 

If the bill payment program your bank uses sent the payment in error to the incorrect credit card they should make it right. I am the I.S. coordinator for a credit union and one of the things I am responsible for is our relationship with our home banking and bill payment provider (we are small and contract this with a third party). If that situation had happened to one of our members our provider would cover the payment and late fee and issue a letter to the credit card explaining the error just in case it resulted in a breach of terms for the member. They would then work with the other card to get the funds returned. I have been involved in this scenario a couple of times. If, on the other hand the member had just set up the payment wrong it is on them for their error.

I would suggest you have the issue escalated because the person on the phone may not be privy to the relationship your institution has with their bill payment vendor.

UPDATE: I called Commerce again today and they said that they could not help me. I called my other credit card plus the one the payment was supposed to go to and got things straightened out. They even wavered the late fee. What a waste of my time and don't even get me started on the aggravation!

Sorry to hear about that. Credit card companies are trying to slide things by us right now at all costs. Our's is due on the 13th and I got our bill and they received it and processed it on the 12th but still charged us a 39.00 late fee. I called them and they credited the charge, but what nerve! Sneaky sneaky sneaky :headache:

Credit card companies are ruthless right now. I had a Disney Visa through Chase for about 5 years. I used it on trips, would take advantage of the six months at 0% interest and have it all paid off in that time frame, always paid on time, etc. Apparently, I wasn't a "good" customer because they raised my APR from 7% to 12%, like it or lump it. I know I could have kept the card seeing that I very very rarely carried a balance, but I just hated the ultimatum feeling it gave me. After carrying that card for 5 years (it was so cute), I closed it.

I'm glad you got things somewhat straightened out. In this economy/environment, it seems like these companies are out for blood.

This is true. My CC company has this policy of paying on the due date before 3pm. After 3pm, it's considered late. I called and asked about it and with no problem was able to get them to cancel the $29 late fee (well I didn't have to really try since they said that they allow 1 late fee reversal every 12 months). Check to see if your CC company has this policy in case the rep you talked with didn't check on it.

ETA: Well, I saw you got it straightened out. Very good!
