I am just a poor boy

Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles such are promises
All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

When I left my home
And my family,
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station,
Running scared...

Laying low,
Seeking out the poorer quarters where the ragged people go,
Searching for the places only they would know.

Lie la lie. Lie la lie lie lie lie lie. Lie la lie. Lie lie lie la la lie lie lie. Lie la lie.

Asking only workman's wages, I go looking for a job,
But I get no offers. Just a come on from the *****s on 7th Avenue.
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome I took some comfort there.

Lie la lie. Lie la lie lie lie lie lie. Lie la lie. Lie lie lie la la lie lie lie. Lie la lie.

Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone,
Going home
Where the NYC winters aren't bleeding me
leading me
going home

In the clearing stands a boxer
and a fighter by his trade
and he carries the reminders
of every glove that laid him down
or cut him, til he cried out
in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving
but the fighter still remains...

And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or
cut him til he cried out in his anger and his shame

"I am leaving, I am leaving"

But the fighter still remains.

Awww BR - you beat me to it! :)

[It took all my will-power not to do the last verse! ;) Cool game!Let's do another one!]

A little known verse not included in the recording:

The years are rushing past me
They're rolling easily
I'm older than I once was
But younger than I'll be, thats not unusual
No it isnt strange
After changes upon changes we are more or less the same
After changes we are more or less the same.

Ditto, Briar Rose 7457 :)

MERLINM: I am just wondering where you heard that? I know that some artists "lost" verses turn up from time to time. Thanks! :)

:bounce: :Pinkbounc THAT WAS FUN! :teeth: LET'S PLAY AGAIN! :Pinkbounc :bounce:

It was in a TV segment on Paul Simon years ago (back in the late 80s if I remember correctly) on one of the news magazines. It was at his summer home sitting on his porch and he was discussing the evolution of his writing and guitar playing style. He used this verse as an example of discarded elements in some of his songs.

Very cool, MERLINM! I would've like to catch that!

oooh, Briar Rose, I have that CD! :bounce: I will have to go check it out! I had a vague memory of it, but my brain's fried at this point. ;) Thanks!
