I am having trouble giving up butter!

Haven't tried Smart Beat.....can't remember why unless it is a number on the label wasn't acceptable.

I HAVE noticed that this light butter does have to be refrigerated all the time or it tries to liquify..... :(

I'm really surprised to hear people use real butter still.

I am a baker and only use Parkay Margerine for baking.

As far as day to day I use I can't believe its not butter and also the spray. I've also tried Brummel and Brown spread and its good too.

We have been eating and cooking with butter forever. Now, I have switched to those low fat "spreads" to cut down on cholesterol and fat. I am using Land O' Lakes' Light Butter With Canola Oil and it is just not 'doing it' for me! I can't taste it on the food so I want to put more on...which I know I shouldn't. I find myself wanting to give up on a spread altogether and just put more salt on the food....which isn't going to work! Kinda' defeats the purpose! **sigh** Getting older isn't as much fun as I hoped it would be! :(

Have you tried the regular Land O' Lakes Butter w/canola, not the light. It's a big difference in taste. I can't eat the light version. Probably not a big difference in the fat content with regular butter, but I'm sure it will help a little. And canola oil is supposedly good for you. I've tried all the "margarine" products and can't stand any of them. Just doesn't come close to butter taste, imo. The LO'L Regular Canola comes the closest. There's nothing like good old fashioned real butter though!

Is Country Crock one of the healthier ones? We always use that and it says vegetable spread on it or something like that, but I've never paid attention to the label.

I haven't tried the LOL regular with canola. As you mentioned, the content is too high. I have tried country crock but did not care for the flavor (sorry). I guess butter has such a distinctive flavor I should know better than try to replace it flavor-wise. I just need to get over it, I think :(

I'll only use butter. I read somewhere (sorry I don't remember where) that the fats in margirine are just as bad if not worse than the fats in butter, so what's the point?

I cook with butter for receipes that call for it, and only use a little bit of butter for veggies and breads. I feel it's easier and better to just cut back than to replace it with something I don't like and could be worse for me!

With the exception of people with certain health issues, if we all just ate what we normally eat but just in moderation, we wouldn't have nearly all the problems we have with weight and health in this country. It's not what we eat, it's how much we eat!

I definately agree!! DH was raised on a farm in Iowa. They did mostly manual labor growing up. They bucked bales of hay and brought in the corn, etc. and they ate 4 meals a day to keep up. But, DH doesn't do all that any more and I can't get him to stop eating like he is going back out to work in the fields!! :(

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly her husband burst into the kitchen. "Careful ... CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh NO!! You're cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN, THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh YIKES! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They're going to STICK! Careful ... CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!" The wife stared at him. "What the hell is wrong with you? You think I don't know how to fry a couple of eggs?" The husband calmly replied, "I wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm driving with you in the car." :teeth:

Yet another vote for the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray. They even have different flavors of it now like garlic and herb for potatoes and stuff. My mom uses only Smart Beat I think it's called. Good luck. Did your doctor have any specific reccomendations?

Here's something else to confuse you further ;) :

What About Margarine vs. Butter?
For years, margarine was pushed as a heart healthy alternative to butter. Butter was known to be filled with cholesterol and saturated fat that were bad for blood cholesterol and increased the risk of heart disease.

Because margarine was made from unsaturated vegetable oils, it was assumed it would be better for the heart.

Unfortunately, research showed that this wasn't necessarily the case. Some forms of margarine - specifically the hard stick margarine - were actually worse for the heart than butter. This was because they contained large amounts of trans fats.

The Nurses' Health Study found that women who ate 4 teaspoons of stick margarine a day had a 50 percent greater risk of heart disease than women who ate margarine only rarely. (4)

So, what should you choose to use? The best option is to use liquid vegetable oils or a soft tub margarine that is labeled trans fat free or non-hydrogenated.

If you choose a soft margarine, be sure that it's also low in saturated fat.

This is from the Harvard School of Public Health's website.

According to DH, his doctor told him to "restrict his diet". I am trying to make adjustments on my own! I don't expect he will tell me exactly what the doctor told him to cut down on....he can be a stinker that way! :)

I'll have to take a look at the sprays. Seems like a spray would be a good way to control how much is used, too.

Ok.....Melissa Etheridge is on Martha Stewart today and she is discussing how she researched foods while she was treated for her cancer and she says butter is something you don't need to cut out of your diet. :confused3

She says she does not eat dairy but she uses butter because it has "good fat" and that butter should not be cut out of our diets even if you don't eat dairy.....should I grab that and run and with!?? :teeth:

No. Butter is not a "good" fat. Olive oil, flax oil, walnut oil--they are good fats. Butter is only "good" in that it is a regular fat and not a trans fat. So while it still does damage, it doesn't do the damage of a margarine with trans fats.

By the way, I have noticed that most margarines have now removed their trans fats--at least the Parkay that I have in the refrigerator no longer has trans fats.

My MIL was just showing me a butter substitute that she found and likes. She does a lot of baking and said it works for baking too. I wish I paid more attention but since my cholesterol level is 130 I am going to stick with butter.

Smart beat is pretty good. You just cant cook with the light version, things dont come out good.

If I were you I would suggest buying an American Heart Association Cookbook, or going to their website to see what their recommendations are.

I have heard of Brumble & Brown but they don't sell it here. I did find Smart Beat Light and we are trying that. It does have a better flavor that the LOL does. I don't seem to find the sprays. Are they in the cooler with the butter and margarines? Or out on a shelf somewhere?

ETA: I made a mistake....I got Smart Balance Light not Smart Beat Light
