I am disgusted!

That is ABSOLUTELY awful!!! How could people do something like that, if I was the vet they came to I would have told them NO, instead they just tried to talk them out of it...ridiculous!

I get that the Vet was afraid that the dog would be killed in another less than humane way, but I am thinking he may face charges.

That's really appalling and incredibly selfish.

I've volunteered with rescue for about 9 years and we've had at least 2 cases I can think of when vets have had people drop off perfectly healthy dogs with nothing at all wrong with them (no issues, aggression, etc) to be euthanized and they've taken the dogs and then called us. In one case the guy wanted a 2 year old dog put down because the dog wouldn't play with his other dog! (where's the exploding head icon??) In that case I think the vet actually charged the guy for the euth before calling us to come get the dog.

My in laws dog was actually rescued from the needle by his vet. His owner, who got him as a pup and had him for 8 years, was dying of cancer and had no family and no one to care for the dog. Her boyfriend tried taking him to the shelter, but when he admitted it wasn't his dog, they refused to take him. The poor woman was at the point that she could hardly get out of bed and definitely couldn't keep up with a crazy border collie. She really felt she was out of options. The vet - who happens to be about 2 minutes from my house - had known this dog since he was a baby. They made the euth appt but asked her if it was ok if they made some calls. They called the town dog officer who something tracked me down as being with BC rescue. I went to see him the same day - about 18 hours from when he was scheduled to die.

We fostered him for a couple of months and then my in-laws adopted him. He's been with them about a year and a half now - spoiled rotten and happy as a clam. :)

Sadly, nothing surprises me anymore. Years ago, I was a vet tech at an animal hospital in a "well to do" area. We once had a female client (upper class, socialite type, about 50 years old) bring her 2 beautiful, healthy purebred Himalayan cats in and request that they be euthanized, as she was "having her interior designer redecorate her house, and the cats didn't "match" the new decor"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We took them and adopted them out without her ever knowing.
A different client brought his pregnant purebred German Shepherd in and wanted all the puppies aborted, because he "wasn't sure who the father was, and he didn't want his female to be "ruined" by delivering a litter of mixed breed pups!!! When we told him we wouldn't do it, his response was that he was "going to put them in a bag and drop it in the river"!! :scared1:
My boss, the owner of the hospital, somehow convinced this man that his female would not be "ruined" if she delivered the pups, and he worked out an agreement with him that if he let the female deliver the pups, we would take them and find them homes. I ended up taking one of the pups and he was one of the most awesome dogs I've ever owned.
Some people should NOT be pet owners.

I agree that it is awful but keep in mind that there are cultures in the
world where a Wife might meet the same fate.:confused3

Also cultures that condone killing children if the father feels they will
dishonor the family.:scared1:

i didn't watch and won't. but, yes it does happen. i had thought about going to school to be a vet tech. i would love to do this. i want that knowledge soooo bad. but, it would be the worse thing for me to do. everytime someone would bring in an animal to be euthanized, it would end up at my home. so, this wouldn't be good.

i even thought of a name for all these animals "the land of misfits". lol nope, i couldn't do euthaniizing. like monique, we take them in and give them a good life until we can find a home for them.

i would love to help animals. but the "stupid" people that own them would drive me nuts. no, that doens't include anyone on here or anyone else that i know personally. you are all just crazy! lol

Good point Denny. Sadly, true too.

Very sad. When I was a vet tech, someone dropped their dog off (springer spaniel). I didn't have a clue what was going on, since I was new, but I was called in to assist. Turns out, they were frustrated that she was getting hyper and incontinent in her old age and had dropped her off to be euthanized. Clueless dimwit that I am, I didn't realize this until the vet was looking into her eyes and saying, "Brigit, you're a GOOD GIRL," and injecting her.

After that, I calmly went into the bathroom and lost my remaining marbles.

Between that and the cocker who was brought in with an eyeball that was popped out of its socket and the owners waited for a couple of days "to see if it would fix itself"...well, I chose another career. I wasn't cut out for that.

God bless those who deal with this stuff on a daily basis.

Li'l Lyn (in my sig) was dropped off at a vet just over a year ago as a 2 year old, perfectly healthy, happy, allegedly "much loved" dog with a broken leg. When the vet gave them the estimate - and without even making a phone call - the family instructed the vet to euthanize her.

Thank heavens for a quick thinking vet tech who got the family to sign Lyn over to her. She then called the rescue group we volunteer with on a Sunday afternoon and they arranged to pay for the surgery to fix her leg. We fostered her through her recovery and even though we were very definitely NOT in the market for a 3rd border collie, by the time she was healed, we couldn't part with her. :goodvibes

Fast forward a year and the adorable little maniac flies like the wind (broken leg? what broken leg?), dives off docks like a champion Lab, and had a blast playing at the FW dog park when we were there in November.
