Okay, this is my 2nd post on the WISH threads ever, and I'm a little nervous!

Really, I'm a a VERY nervous penguin!

The most I have run/walked is a 10K up until now. I am carrying extra weight and know that I can walk the 1/2 but am really scared to start. I'm more afraid of talking myself out of succeeding! :headache:

I've enlisted my DH to be my cheering section and am willing to bribe myself with a trip to WDW in March to get to that 13.1 miles! Yesterday I bought a brand new pair of Asics Gel Nimbus 10s. They are beautiful - and already dirty. I took them out for a while last night so I would not be able to return them! :lmao:

Everyone here seems so organized and well-acquainted!

I know how to start my training - but how do I get started here? :grouphug:

Any advice for a newbie WISHer is appreciated!

Jennifer: Hey girl... :welcome: to the WISH racing team.

We are a bunch of wild and crazy disney freaks who enjoy doing races. We run, jog, wog, racewalk and walk. All levels are in this group!!! We love to get together at Disney races, but some also do local races. We inspire to stay healthy with our exercise and healthy lifestyle and hanging with the team that give us support, hugs, a kick in the butt when we need it.

The main stickey at the top of the threads can give an idea of the Racing WISH team and what is available to you.

Also try looking for the "main" weekly thread. It is labeld with the first Sunday fo the week. Ot you can look for the thread for one of the races you are doing, like the one for the Princess Half Marathon (I'm doing that also.)

When you feel comfortable doing that maybe ask Panda Dave to be on a team so your time and distances you are putting in can be counted.

Good Luck and Welcome to the TEAM!!!

DLF>DNF>>DNS - our "motto" Dead Last Finish is greater than Did Not Finish which trumps Did Not Start!!

Welcome to the addiction, Jennifer!

I'm guessing since you mentioned penguin, you've read john bingham's books. If not, Marathoning for Mortals is a great training tool!

The ASICS nimbus rocks! They came out with some really cool colors for the new model!

Jennifer, Welcome to the WISH team. I'm a relative newbie too (this past year). Stick around, I think you will find the support here a wonderful motivator.
:goodvibes I'm envious of your Asics Nimbus, I'm needing to replace my shoes and I'm seriously considering the Asics Nimbus. I'm wearing Asics now, but it's time to replace them (getting shin splints) and I'm just trying to talk myself into forking over the $$ for the Nimbus.

Hi Jennifer,

Welcome to WISH. There is a really great mix of people here. Some like to post a lot and some just every once in a while. Either way you'll be able to get a lot of support and encouragement and find answers to any questions you have about your training. A good place to start is the weekly training thread and the thread for the Princess 1/2 since you're doing that. Lots of luck with your training and no talking yourself out of succeeding. We'll have none of that.

Cindy

Thanks to everyone - I'm feeling better already!

SamSam- It did hurt for a second when I handed over my Mastercard for the Nimbuses (Nimbi? LOL) but once I had them on my feet, there was no other choice - I was hooked! Mine are the Frost Blue color - which, of course, is Cinderella blue to me! :thumbsup2

chimera- In my non-walking life, I am a librarian, so I read before I make any move! I LOVE John Bingham's books! I suffer from some of the same issues he faced - that my mind can be my own worst enemy, that I can talk myself back to the couch in a minute, and that I worry about what others think. For me, it is a small miracle every time I head out the door with my asics on!

One of my projects for today (I've already walked!) is to print out my training schedule. I need to customize it since I work every other Saturday and need to move my long days to Sundays. Lots of Disney clip art will help keep me wanting to look at it - I hope! :rotfl2:

I am in awe of everyone here - but I know that it would be so much easier to sabotage myself of I try to do it all alone, so I'm coming out of my shell. Thanks to everyone for making it easier! :grouphug:

Just wanted to add my welcome :) I am pretty new to the boards myself. My DH and I just started running in Jan and just today completed our 2nd half marathon-- if we can do it, so can you

I too started out in fair, but not great shape and wheezed my way through those first few training miles, forcing myself to "run" at 4.2mph for a whole mile. I saw a group with WISH shirts on at the Minnie 15K in May and have become hooked on the boards ever since. I was previously too embarrassed to run outdoors for fear someone would see me in my out of shapeness. I have now gotten over that and figure "at least I'm out here trying." I found when I stopped worrying about how I looked I had a much better time of it.

Good luck with your training.

Jennifer - :welcome:

There are lots of penguins on this board so you'll fit right in! :thumbsup2

I really liked John Bingham's W/R plan for training. I've yet to do the W3/R2 at any of the races but I'm trying to work up to it. Ha! However, the plan did help me finish and that's what counts!

Good luck with your training. The Disney clip art helps a lot! That, and a picture of the medal.

Welcome Jennifer!! I am fairly new myself. I have not done any Disney events, and have only done 2 other official events. I'll be doing the Princess as well.

There is a thread here of folks who are doing the Princess. You may want to stop by for some inspiration and support.

Jennifer, from one Penguin to another Welcome!

It will be such fun to read about your training. Don't feel that you will be nervous. That is part of the magic of all this. Join in and post often. You will be able to get to know your WISH Team mates and find that the training really becomes an enjoyable journey as you get to the start and on through that finish line!

Hello and welcome to WISH. I'm fairly new to the team as well. Everyone has been so helpful, supportive and friendly. I just went to my first Disney running event last month and met some WISHers. Talk about fun!

Hi Jennifer and :welcome: We're glad you're here. Everyone around here is so friendly and supportive. On the days when you feel like skipping a workout, you'll find friends to say, "Get out there and get it done" and on days when you have your best workout ever, we'll be here to celebrate your success. No need to be nervous, you can do this!:)

Hi Jennifer!

Don't worry so much, you will be fine. The mental game is sometimes the toughest part of running. It has been nearly 18 months since I lined up at my first start line being grossly overweight and over 40. I was a bit overwhelmed at my first 5K start, something which now amuses me looking back. Then at my first HM I felt those feeling again. Each time I felt a little bit like I didn't belong there, but the truth is that I proved that I belonged there.

Now I can't do much about the over 40 part of my life, but I have managed to trim back from a high of 263 lbs. to a current 227 lbs. in that time--and I haven't been sub-230 in my weight in some years! When I manage to get to sub-200 lbs. you may hear the screams of joy from my direction!

As for you, you've already done the tough part, which is to start exercising. Now the next toughest part is to show up and start. After you start, your body will know what to do next and you will feel a great weight being lifted from around your neck.
