Everyone gets rattled in serious accidents to some extent, some more than others.
In the time it takes a human to react, a car going just 30 mph has travelled 44 feet. That's before you even consider what to do. At 50 mph that's 73 feet. If the other car involved is coming from the opposite direction double those numbers because not only has he travelled that distance toward you, you have travelled the same distance toward him. Given that, most accidents that aren't the fault of you doing something wrong aren't easily avoidable.
