I must be the only one who didn't know that people were really calling French Fries, "Freedom Fries". Yesterday at work, I had someone come through drive thru and wanted two Super Size Freedom Fries. I was like "Huh?". Are many people calling them this, or was this some random person?

I still eat French Fries. Good grief I don't think the French had a thing to do with them - see

'Do you want Belgian fries with that?" That's what you might be hearing at fast-food restaurants today if it hadn't been for World War I. The Belgians claim to have invented "French" fries, though no one knows for sure. The dish was first prepared as early as the 1700s and was simply called fried potatoes. Thomas Jefferson sampled them in Paris and brought the recipe home. At a White House dinner in 1802, the menu included "potatoes served in the French manner." But that's not how they got their name.

Their commercial success began in 1864, when Joseph Malines of London put "fish and chips" (French fries) on the menu. His success inspired others across Europe. But they weren't French fries until 1918 or so. American soldiers stationed in France gobbled up fried potatoes. They dubbed them "French fries" and liked them so much they wanted to have them at home, too. Americans still love French fries. Last year alone, more than 4.5 billion pounds of them were sold in the United States.

Banzai -- I don't know how much it's catching on but you may have a few more come through with that order. I think everyone realizes they aren't a French product -- they just feel some kind of symbolism in changing the name. I heard that in WWII they called sauerkraut "Freedom Slaw" and that's where the idea came from.

I can't eat any kind of fries, Freedom or otherwise :(

I had heard of it but I don't really know anyone who actually orders fries this way.

my mom said the guy working the drive thru at wendy's a few nights ago was laughing because someone had ordered freedom fries.

I write for the school newspaper, and we have a top ten list in every issue. We're thinking that the next one might be the Top Ten Ways to Substitute "Freedom" for "French." We've thought of freedom fries, freedom toast, freedom horn, freedom vanilla, freedom braid, freedom kissing, and our favorite...freedom poodles!:p

Hey nsync - how about *Freedom Maid*? or *Freedom Onion Soup*?

...sigh...the entire thing is just ludicrous...

My bf and I heard people in the next car order Freedom Fries,we both burst into laughter since we through it was nuts(we were at a Sonic)

My 6 year old DD was devasted when her grandmother told here there were no more French Fries... only Freedom Fries...

However, this has solved one problem... she doesn't ask for Fries with her meals when we dine out... because she doesn't believe they make them anymore!
