Just to put out some recent info on the photo-radar ticketing here:
The usual set up spot is located near MM 21, under the bridge. I have seen it there last October, twice, targeting Southbound traffic both times. This trip:
Southbound:
Drove to FL on Sat 4/17. Went through the Ridgeland area at 6:30 a.m. No van, no equipment set up, on either side of the road. No presence at all. Not sure how well a camera setup would work, without flash, in a low light or dark situation. That may be the reason why no equipment or van was there.
Northbound:
Drove back to NC on Friday 4/23. Went through the area at 4:00 p.m. There was a sign up, back @ MM 16, that said something to the effect of 'photo-radar assisted targeted enforcement area'. Something like that, as a warning. At MM 21, under the bridge, set up for Northbound traffic, was the equipment (2 tripods) and a van or box truck. As traffic was slowed due to high volume, there was no way they could have issued any speeding tickets. We crawled through the area at 30-35 mph.
So, the enforcement is still ongoing. IMHO - I don't know how this could work at night, without any flash (which would be a huge distraction for any other drivers), since they need to capture the license plate and the driver description, when issuing the ticket.
Anyway, that's my latest update on the Ridgeland, SC traffic area. Hope that helps.
