Beltsville, Md. (AP) - An 8,700-gallon gasoline tanker truck is still burning in the southbound lanes of Interstate-95 at the Capital Beltway.
Both the southbound and northbound lanes of I-95 are closed north of Washington for safety concerns and heavy smoke conditions.
Prince George's Fire and Rescue spokesman Mark Brady says the driver was able to escape after he noticed smoke in the cab of his truck around 5 am. He apparently pulled the truck over to the shoulder of the highway and jumped out. The fire spread from the cab to the tank of the truck.
There are no reports of any other injuries.
Maryland State Police spokesman Rob Moroney says that the fire was likely caused by some sort of mechanical failure, not a traffic accident.
Firefighters plan to let most of the gasoline burn off before they try to extinguish the blaze.
Brady says there's not a threat of further explosions because the tanker is well ventilated.
Some cars on the highway near the burning truck have been abandoned. Brady says drivers have moved back from the scene to give firefighters time to work.
