I’m back from 4 days in Orlando where I had another AMAZING time (and my third stay at the Universal Orlando Resort this year.)

Days: June 1-4th, 2006

Cast: Anthony (Me), Luis, Maria, & Quinisha

Resort: Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando

Day 1 - Animal Kingdom/Epcot/MGM Studios
Day 2 - SeaWorld
Day 3 - Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure
Day 4 - Islands of Adventure

I’ll just do a rundown of some highlights/lowlights of my trip. Mostly highlights!!!!

Animal Kingdom
Expedition: Everest
This was my first time riding Everest and I had heard a lot of mixed opinions so I knew to keep my expectations low. The ride got off to a good start and the climb up the mountain seemed promising… but overall I have to say the ride was a big disappointment. I mean, if there’s one thing Disney should know how to do by now is build a coaster around a mountain. But there seemed to be absolutely no airtime, no steep drops, no real tight turns… whoever compared it to Big Thunder Mountain was pretty much right. However, the Yeti is great (although far far far from the most advanced animatronic ever created), the projection with the Yeti was a great scene, and the backwards portion in the dark is amazing. I liked my second ride on it better (I was more towards the back of the train) and will definitely ride it again. But it still pains me that it cost $100 million. We all like the $40 million Revenge of the Mummy better. Imagine what it would have been like with $100 million…

At Animal Kingdom, we also took a look at:

Primeval Whirl
Dinosaur
Kilimanjaro Safari
Legend of the Lion King
It’s Tough To Be A Bug 4D

We left Animal Kingdom at about 2:00 p.m. and headed to Planet Hollywood in Downtown Disney. It wasn’t my first choice… or second or third choice… but I do love my Cap’N’Crunch Chicken Fingers.

We got to Epcot at around 4... Soarin’ had over a 120 minute wait (I wouldn’t wait more than 30 for it… honestly…) and all FastPasses had been distributed. Test Track had less wait but also no FastPasses. I’m thinking now that when I go to Disney again and do a few parks in one day, I should hit Epcot first. I usually do but Everest was top priority but I don’t think the waits for it get anywhere near as long as Soarin’ or Test Track.

At Epcot, we did:

Test Track
Mission: Space
Spaceship Earth (an opportunity for some of us to take a nap, some of us to text message our friends back home, and 1 of us to take in one of his favorite attractions… not me)

We left Epcot and headed to the Hard Rock. When checking into Universal hotels, I usually do it early on the morning and the head to the parks. This time, however, I called at around 11:00a.m. to notify them of my late check-in (I believe it was 6:30 at this time) and then called again to confirm at around 2:00. It’s not really necessary but just in case.

I’ve visited the hotel before but never actually stayed there. I have stayed Club Level at Portofino Bay and plenty of times at the Royal Pacific Resort as well (I’m thinking at least at least 10 times by now…)

I usually find the Hard Rock to be more expensive and harder to book at a discounted rate. But I booked a few months ago and got a pool view for one night at $219 with the APH rate and the other 2 nights at $239. I also added a special request on the reservation for theme park view, if there was any.

I checked in, gave the girls the room keys and told them to go ahead up to the room while I would park the car. There was absolutely no parking (and it seemed to be like there was less parking than the Royal Pacific). And it’s funny because when I first got to the hotel, the guy asked me if I would be self-parking or valet. And I was like… I don’t mind self-parking. Is it easy to find parking? He said “Well… sometimes. You just have to look for it.” And I was like.. “I will park right in front in the grass if I have to.” So I drove up and figured I’d just valet but I told the guy I had chosen to self-park but I could not find any parking. The guy told me he’d just valet for the price of self-parking. That’s nice, right? Saved $7.

Anyway, I get a call from the girls telling me there’s only 1 King bed in the room. There’s 4 of us… 1 King bed. It’s not gonna happen.

So I went back to the front desk to have it sorted out. My reservation was for 2 Queen Beds Pool View. When I try to switch it, the girl at the front desk tells me that there’s no other Pool View rooms and that they only have a Garden View. But what she can do is refund me back the extra money I paid for Pool View. I was like… that SUCKS. I booked a long time ago specifically for Pool View because I didn’t want a view of another building… or the parking lot… or some big ol’ trees. I even said I’d be willing to pay for a deluxe room or a club room with a view. And if it helped, I’m a LoewsFirst Gold member. She was on the phone with the manager and the manager said if I took the Garden View, they would knock $40 off each night and they also threw in free vouchers for the breakfast buffet at The Kitchen (a $65 value), and CityWalk Party Passes for the 4 of us (a $40 value).

I was still disappointed with the view… but I kinda made out like a bandit, didn’t I?

Nice photoshop work in your picture!!! I did a whole series of pictures like that of our last vacation for my daughter's apartment and framed them all in a black frame with white matting. Your picture would look great framed!!!

Good job with the room negotiations!!!

Thanks for posting. Will there be other installments for the rest of your trip?

Yeah, of course. I'll be back with all the details. :)

Just for the Record....a "$100 Million dollar attraction" is just a Euphamism for a Major attraction....They do not spend anywhere Near that amount...Mummy is also called a "$100 million Ride"... :smokin:

I was really impressed with the room. I really liked the vibe and brightness of it. I’m usually at the Royal Pacific or if at Disney, the Animal Kingdom Lodge, which are both considerably darker. But this room had a lot of use of whites with nice light blues and greens. I especially liked the framed B&W photo of Michael Jackson performing above my bed. He’s one of my favorite people EVER (The room also had framed shots of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles).

Here’s a tally of the sleep we all got the night before we drove to Orlando:

Me (Driver): 0
Quinisha: 1
Luis: 2
Maria: 2

I guess… we were just too excited to sleep. In fact, when my alarm clock went off at 4am, I just started laughing…but I got up right then. So everyone was really tired and getting ready to get to bed (at like 8:55p.m.) but I was like.. “Hey, do you guys wanna go to MGM and ride Rock n’ Rollercoaster and Tower of Terror?” And everyone said sure why not? OH! I forgot to mention this… as my LoewsFirst amenity, I got the bottle of Red Wine (only because last time when I got the Milk & Cookies over the Red Wine I was met with many many expletives..) and we popped it open and I drank….most of it. So I definitely got a GREAT buzz going.

So we get to the MGM parking lot (is it just me or is this the most difficult Disney parking lot to navigate?) and we’re inside within a few minutes. The Tower of Terror had a posted wait time of 45 minutes although in actuality it was 0. I ran into the pre-show room exclaiming “THIS IS MY FAVORITE RIDE! WOOOOO!” And it is my favorite ride in Disney… As I boarded the elevator, the bell hop/CM told us to “enjoy your doom… I mean, room” and I let out another “WOOOOO!”

Then we got on Rock n’ Rollercoaster twice. I love Aerosmith and I love rollercoasters but this one really isn’t one of my faves. I think it starts off amazing but then I think it gets kind of slow. I wanted to get another ride on Tower of Terror but our friend Quinisha doesn’t ride it so they wanted to do something we could all do together.

And after that the park was closed and it was back to the Hard Rock. At this point, I had been up for 36 hours on no sleep so I remember us ordering some food and the next thing I remember is waking up… and seeing everyone eating it. It was like a nightmare. Lol.. But apparently they tried to wake me up. Yeah. Sure. They just wanted it all to themselves. Well the place that we order from is this place called Broadway Pizza. I’m not sure which location but it’s right off of International Drive. It’s in the yellow pages in the room under Pizza. Anyway, they deliver and it’s good. The wings were AMAZING. And we got a large pizza and my friend got a calzone. It was good and definitely beats paying the overpriced room service food + 20% room service charge + $3.00 something else charge.

I am such a terrible guest that I was up for like 30 seconds before I spilled marinara sauce on my sheets. Yeah… just goes to show… you should wait at least a minute before waking up and putting cheese sticks in your lap. But then the next morning, I left a note apologizing and $10 for housekeeping. That’s okay right?

Day 2

So the next morning, we went to Sea World. I’m a proud Silver Passport Holder…but a terrible one. I got it like over a year ago and never went back. I should probably cancel but I really like Sea World. I think Kraken is one of the best coasters in Orlando, Journey to Atlantis is a blast and feeding the animals is really fun. The shows? Well, the Clyde & Seamore show is definitely the most re-watchable. Oh, this is what we did…

Journey To Atlantis (twice)
Kraken
Blue Horizons
Clyde & Seamore Take Pirate Island
Pets Ahoy!
Odyssea
Wild Arctic
Sea Lions Tonight!
Believe

So since the last time I was there, I know Blue Horizons, Odyssea and Believe are new.. Okay, about Blue Horizons and Believe. So… did the animals get new contracts that said they wanted to be relegated to just supporting roles in the new shows? Because… they really weren’t in it that much.

And seriously, Blue Horizons and Believe were so theatrical that I thought I should have a Playbill. Blue Horizons is definitely the better of the two shows.. I get it. Believe is amazing technically… but it’s just so, so, so hokey. And the trainers are in it for way too long, even more than the whales. It’s bizarre.

Luckily, we visited the Underwater Viewing for Shamu earlier and were able to get our fix. The whales are amazing and I absolutely loved how they would get close to the tank and look at you.

I thought Odyssea was great but my friends thought it was pretty boring. Pets Ahoy was really enjoyable and funny. Sea Lions Tonight was HILARIOUS. I had so much fun in this show and their spoofs were dead-on. I definitely recommend trying to catch Blue Horizons, Believe, Pets Ahoy, and Fusion beforehand so you get the jokes.

We ate at Sharks Underwater Grill and it was great, as usual. This was my second time dining here. I had the Coconut Chicken and Shrimp Spear Appetizer which were good but just missing a little something. For my entrée, I had the Crab Cakes with a side of cole slaw and fries. These were good but I’ve had better (HOUSTON’S!!!). I kind of swallowed them though (I was hungry…) and so I was picking off of Nisha’s popcorn shrimp.

We walked up to Sharks Underwater Grill at around 10:35am to make a PS and the earliest time was 4:30. 4:30!! So if there’s a way to make them earlier than 10:00am, I suggest you do it.

Once it got dark, we got another two rides on Journey to Atlantis and another two on Kraken. We left at 9p.m.

When we got to the hotel, we went up to the room for a minute before going down to the Velvet Lounge. The Heat game was on (GO HEAT!!!) so we went down to the bar to watch it. I loved having this lounge at the hotel. It was really funky, the music was good, and it’s a great place to relax, grab a drink and hang out after a day at the parks.

What is the Underwater Viewing for Shamu? Other than what it obviously sounds like. Is it a separate tour, do you have to make reservations?

Thanks!

ITA about EE! I really thought it was a rehash of BTMRR and absolutely nothing to write home about. I also agree with you about RNR: starts off good, but then fizzles out.

Sounds like you had a great trip!

I forgot to tell you guys! So while at Animal Kingdom on the first day, we went into a gift shop and found a megaphone for sale. So I got on the megaphone and started to spread the word about Universal. I see this little boy is looking at me and here’s our exchange:

Me: Little boy… little boy, have you ridden Revenge of the Mummy?
::boy shakes his head no::
Me: No?? It’s ‘cause you’re at the wrong park… That’s at Universal. Do you know how to get there?
Boy: No..
Me: It’s right off of I-4. It’s real easy. Is your mom here?
::boy tugs on his mom’s shirt who’s laughing::
Me: I’ll give her directions.

We all have to do our part to drive up attendance. ;)

Oh! And apparently SeaWorld is running some kind of promotion (I don’t know what or for how long) but I got 20% off my meal at Sharks Underwater Grill instead of the usual 10%. So if you’re going to SeaWorld soon, you might want to take advantage of this offer.

Okay, back to the end of day 2. We got a little hungry in the room at around 10:30p.m. So we took out the room service menu and we all thought… you know… these prices aren’t so bad. I was craving the milk and cookies that come as LoewsFirst amenity. They’re so big and good! So I asked the girl if these were the same cookies and they were. Only difference is… it’s $6 for the cookies, no milk included. Then $4 for the milk. Plus my 20% charge and my part of the $3 charge… I basically spent $13 for some milk and cookies. Maria got the turkey club which was really good ($13 + charges) and Luis and Nisha got the chicken tender meals ($10.50 + charges). The food arrived in less than 30 minutes and I loved how the man rolled in the table and put them in between the beds and we just all sat in bed and ate off the table. It was AWESOME!

Day 3

So this was my genius plan for Day 3. Usually we see Universal first and then Islands on the last day because we can get through it relatively fast and usually start the 4-hour drive home by 5p.m. or 5:30. But I thought… this time, let’s go to Islands first and only do the water rides… so that we can get soaked but then go back to the room and change before heading out to Universal. We wouldn’t have this luxury the next day unless we managed to wake up early enough to be back in the room and ready for check-out at 11:00. It’s possible but… we’re on vacation!

So we did, we went to Islands and did

Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls (2x)
Popeye’s Bilge-Rat Barges
Jurassic Park River Adventure

So… apparently there’s no splashing on Dudley Do-Right’s. We’ve done it before but this time we got screamed at like CRAZY by the girl supervising before you go up the lift hill. I mean SCREAMING… I didn’t even make out what she said because I couldn’t believe her panties were that much in a ruffle. I haven’t been screamed at like that since Kindergarten when I was in a food fight at my Catholic school’s cafeteria. We all laughed about it and later on our impressions of the girl became more and more demonic (especially with our megaphone)…but still… don’t do it.

Then we went back to the room, changed and were at Universal by 2p.m. We did:

Shrek 4D
Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast
Twister
Revenge of the Mummy (2x)

Then a break for lunch at International Food & Film Festival for my Fried Chicken fix. I noticed on my way there that a new Fried Chicken Shack opened in Amity. It also serves Fish & Chips. Now, I’m all for Fried Chicken Shacks… I wish they were as frequent as Starbucks… but it’s way too hot to eat outside. So I might not get to eating at this thing until Orlando freezes over.

Men In Black
Jaws
E.T. Adventure
Revenge of the Mummy

And that was it for us. I wanted to check out Beetlejuice’s Revue but we missed all the showtimes. Same for Horror Make-Up and Fear Factor. If we had more days yeah but not this trip…

The night before, I had made a reservation for Margaritaville for Saturday night. And the only thing that was available was 7:30. So we head on to Margaritaville even though we weren’t hungry at all…But we’ve rejected it so many times before because of the long waits that I was just like… I just wanna sit in the damn place!

So we went and it was cool… Honestly though, I hated what they were showing on the screen. Couldn’t they just show Jimmy Buffett performances? For those of you who haven’t been, it’s basically footage of people (and it doesn’t look current either) in the audience or in the parking lot of some kind of festival or concert I suppose. And they all seem drunk and I was waiting for the girls to lift their shirts up… It seemed like the next logical move. It was just so random!

Food… Let’s see… I got the Crab, Shrimp and Mushroom Dip which was really good. And no one else really eats stuff that funky so I had it all to myself. The rest of them ate the Volcano Nachos. Good stuff. I also tried the Jambalaya which… I’ve had a lot of Jambalaya and it just wasn’t that great. But you know what was good? The drinks!!! I had the Havanas and Bananas and my friend got the Wildberry Colada. The Wildberry was a little too sweet for me but mine tasted like paradise! And it went down so smooth..
I got it To Go but the security guard before entering the walkway to Hard Rock stopped us and asked if there was alcohol in the drinks. I, of course, lied and said no but my friend said yes. And so we were stuck drinking by the empty entrance to Universal chatting it up with an 18-year-old security guard until we finished.

We thought about using our CityWalk passes tonight but only 2 of us were willing to go. We were really tired. So instead we moved to the party to Emack & Bolio’s. For those of you who don’t know, this is the ice cream shop located in the Hard Rock Hotel and it was awesome. I had a Oreo Cookie Frapper’s Delight. Let’s just say it was so good, I forgot to ask anyone if they wanted to try it. (A standard custom…)

We also walked around the hotel and enjoyed the live music by the pool. You don’t even need to leave your hotel to have fun, which I really get a kick out of.

Day 4

The next morning we went to breakfast at The Kitchen before check-out. I really don’t eat much for breakfast. My favorite thing to have is just a glass of milk. But we had the free vouchers so I got a plate of some eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon and a biscuit. There was more that looked good but I just didn’t have the appetite.

Then it was check-out time. It went pretty smoothly although they had no record of the manager knocking off $40 each night for the room inconvenience. But I explained everything and it was taken care of quickly.

Back to Islands… This time, we started at the end of the park and worked our way around to the front.

The Cat In The Hat
Poseidon’s Fury
Dueling Dragons - Ice
Dueling Dragons - Fire

We visited the Eighth Voyage of Sinbad show but it was experiencing technical difficulties so we left. Later on we heard they stopped the show in the middle and took it from the top.

Jurassic Park River Adventure
Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls (where we got soaked and thus defeated the purpose of the previous day’s trip to Islands)
The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman
The Hulk
Dr. Doom’s Fear Fall

Then, one of my favorite ways to end my trips is at Mythos. I absolutely love this restaurant. I had the Risotto of the Day again and this time… honestly, it was so long and detailed that I had to ask the girl twice what it was. But apparently the beef was shoulder tip. I was like “shoulder tip?” Shoulder tip. Apparently there’s meat there.

But it was good! I trust the Chefs at Mythos by now. :) We also had the tempura sushi and BLT flatbread appetizers… both excellent. Luis got the fried chicken wrap… still as good as ever. Maria got the grilled chicken club and Nisha got the Balsamic Chicken (which was only okay). Then for dessert, I had the crème brulee dessert shot. A perfect finish to a GREAT few days.

My next trip is tentatively scheduled for August 10-14th for my birthday. I currently have a room booked at the Royal Pacific Club Level… but I might book a few more. Last year I had 3 rooms at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for me and 10 of my friends. We’ll see how many are in this year… I’m going to make invitations on CD and make a little compilation of Universal-themed songs and have printed artwork on it. Sounds cool, right? Wish me luck!

Until next time, thanks for reading and hopefully I’ll see you at Universal! :thumbsup2

Thanks!

No, no reservations or tour. It's just the area where you can watch the whales swim around the tank. They even stop and look at you for a while. I even saw baby Shamu playing with these 2 kids. It was awesome. Maybe I went on a day that wasn't too busy but the underwater viewing was pretty empty. Just follow the signs near Shamu Stadium.

Wow, thanks for the great report!!! Maybe I'm not as themeparked out as I thought, LOL! You got me wanting to plan another trip. I don't think I'll ever combine Disney and Universal again though.

That's fantastic that you got them to credit you for your room! I didn't request anything and we had a beautiful garden view, but that's always how it works out for me, LOL. Expectation = screwed up :p

I couldn't believe it when we walked into our room and we had a big picture of Zappa on our wall, one of dh's favorites, pretty much sold him on the hotel! :goodvibes

I'm glad you all had a great time. Have fun planning your B-day trip!

:rotfl:

I have visions of people looking into the lobster tanks selecting their dinner. Only it is the whales picking their dinner...."Gee, Sham...that man in the green shirt looks like he is a 200 pounder...." :lmao:

Anyway...thanks for reminding me about that yummy dip at M'ville. We will be there 7/7 for my sister's 40th birthday. :cool1:

NBRS, do you know the name of the place that offers fish & chips? We were SOOOO disappointed that they turned Capt. Quints into a snack shop because we loved their fish & chips, but I'm wondering if they are just making them somewhere else now. We didn't see this during our trip, and Mike will be way happy to learn his F&C have returned. :)

They changed the name a few days ago but it's either Brody's Chicken Shack or Amity Fried Chicken now. I saw a Fried Chicken Basket and Fish & Chips on the menu. It's in on the right side of Amity across from the games and before Jaws.

Thanks so much! We'll take a look for it on our September trip.

Enjoyed reading your report ~ Thanx for sharing.
