We are looking for a hotel that would be central to Universal and other LA sites. Is this area safe and convenient? Has anyone stayed here? Any other suggestions. Thanks:surfweb:

When we went to Universal last summer, we were also looking at other hotels. We stayed at the Hyatt Valencia. It is about 30min on the hwy to get to Universal. It was very nice, attached to the very nice Valencia outdoor mall, and a very short drive to a Mimi's Cafe. We really enjoyed this place. It cost us $99 (includes taxes) a night. If you have any specific questions on this hotel, just let me know.

From the Hyatt Valencia, we also went to other L.A. locations, such as the Grove and American Girl.

Staying in El Segundo (near LAX) would mean that you'd have to spend significant time on I-405, which is always a mess (IMO). I'd suggest looking for a place closer to Hollywood/Burbank like the Hilton or Sheraton at Universal City, or the "Beverly Garland" Holiday Inn (http://www.beverlygarland.com/).

The Hyatt Valencia is in a very safe community, with a Macaroni Grill, Claim Jumper & Red Lobster all within 10 minutes.

I wouldn't recommend staying in ElSegundo either; the San Diego Freeway (I-405) is a parking lot 75% of the time.

I'd recommend Glendale; there's a Hilton Hotel there which is very nice, and plenty of shops and restaurants within 4-6 blocks.
