Hyannis Port- Cape Cod, Massachusetts ????'s

I'm thinking of taking my parents to Hyannis Port- Cape Cod for a summer vacation. They honeymooned in Hyannis Port almost 45 yrs ago and have never been back. They stayed at a place called Twin something, which was a bed and breakfast, I believe.
Anyway, I'm looking for hotels and things to do in that area for a 4 night visit, Monday- Friday, probably the 2nd or 3rd week of August. It would be my parents, dd-14, ds-9, and myself, so 5 people in 1 room.
Also, is anyone familiar with Springfield and the basketball hall of fame? How far is it between Springfield and Hyannis Port? It's possible we could spend 2 days at each or would it be better to stick with just one destination? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Springfield is quite a way from Hyannisport--at least a couple of hours. You may want to stop there on the way to the Cape, though. That would be my suggestion. I've heard they recently made some great improvements/additions to the B-ball Hall of Fame. Having said that, I still wouldn't spend more than a couple of hours in the area. Have fun on Cape Cod--one of my all-time favorite places!

Hyannisport is lovely -- as is all of the Cape. There is tons to see and do. In the middle of summer, you might want to think of making ressies now because it's a hot spot!

I don't believe there are any hotels in Hyannisport any more -- just a few B&Bs. It's mostly very large homes, a private residential area. You'll be able to get a hotel in Hyannis but do it soon as summer is fast approaching and you may not get what you want for the dates you want.

Also, if you are looking for something where you can enjoy the beach, pick a hotel either on the beach or within walking distance as most of the beaches in the Town of Barnstable (where Hyannis is located) require resident parking stickers and those that don't fill up really quickly. Nothing worse than sitting in your car in the hot sun, waiting to get into a beach parking lot.

Hyannis to the Basketball Hall of Fame is about a 3 to 3.5 hour drive in the best of conditions but roadwork this summer on rte 495 (which is the road you'd be using to get to the MassPike to get out to Springfield) can add another 1-2 hours on that trip, especially on a weekend.

My advice is stay on the Cape and enjoy all that's there. There is so much to do and see and 4 days will barely scratch the surface!

Does anyone know of any nice hotels in the Hyannis area, esp. on the beach would be great? Thanks!

I stayed there years ago, but dont' remember where (parents paid) But just wanted to say I remember it being a very nice place, Hyannis Port, not the hotel. We were only there a couple of days, stayed on the way to and from Nantucket.

Cape Cod is a wonderful place. We've been going there for years. August is a very popular month so as other people said you should book very soon. If you have AAA they offer some great deals on Cape Cod lodging. We normally stay on the outer Cape so I'm not really familiar with good places in the Hyannis area. However, now that we have a little one we've spent time in Hyannis because there's so much to do for kids there. It might be good for you because they have a variety of room sizes. As far as things to do, of course there's the beach but during the summer most towns have concerts, festivals etc. Here's a website with all kinds of information:

One of our favorite things to do that I would highly recommend is to drive to Provincetown (or P'town as the natives call it). It's about an hour from Hyannis. Once you get to where the National Seashore begins the scenery is spectacular. P'town is a lot of fun but rather out outragious. Think Greenwich Village or New Hope, PA.

A fun thing to do in Hyannis is the duck tour. It's one of those amphibious (sp?) vehicles that can go on both land and water - and they do. You get a tour of Hyannis and then you go in the harbor. DH & I and the kids - DS8 & DD4 - did that last June and had a lot of fun. We also played mini golf on main street.

We stayed at the Cape Codder in Hyannis (they have a web site). I wouldn't consider it romantic, but it was a decent place. It was a llittle bit more $$ because it has an indoor wave pool and two water slides. We went there for the kids but DH & I liked it too. One thing about it tho, I would never eat at The Hearth & Kettle (re-named the barfin' kettle) since the food was so bad. (It's the on-site restaurant)

We went to Cape Cod last summer in June and stayed at the Lighthouse Inn. I think it's in West Dennis. They have a website www.lighthouseinn.com. It wasn't cheap, but we stayed in a lovely oceanfront cottage with a refrigerator, so we often had sandwiches for lunch and/or dinner. The inn also provided a full breakfast every morning -- including lobster omelets.

Yes the Cape and the Basketball Hall of Fame are far apart....3+ hours but both are worth a trip. The Hall of Fame is in a whole new building in Springfield...it just opened not too long ago. As for there not being much in that area...well that's just incorrect..I am from that part of Massachusetts and there is so much to do especially in the summer time. In Northampton, not too far from Springfield, there is a biking/walking/jogging trail that is on an old train track route...the town itself is loads of fun to walk around and do shopping. Northampton is well know for it's independent. arty shops and great restaurants. It's also the best place to people watch. Up I-91 north there is the Yankee Candle Factory in South Deerfield (it's more than just candles). In the same area is Historic Deerfield which was the site of an Indian raid way back in the day. There is all sorts of fun things to do on the Connecticut River, you can rent canoes or pontoon boats. There is Six Flags New England which is in Agawam, Mass...just past Springfield on I-91 South. There are also loads of places to camp and hike. Western Mass is worth a trip...it's not touristy by any means like the Cape but there is more to do than you think.
