We left Thursday afternoon from Nor Cal around 2pm had hoped to get into LA around 8pm, and didn't know about the rain or closure until we were about 40 miles south of Bakersfield. One of the Amber alert signs said I5 closed, take 58 as a detour. We started going that direction for about 25 miles but something just felt wrong. I'm glad we stopped and turned around, because it wasn't until later that we found out 58 was worse than I5. We got back to the base of the Grapevine and thought maybe we would wait it out, so we had dinner, and then several people mentioned I5 was not going to reopen until 9am. So hunkering down wasn't going to be an option. We went back and took 166 to 101. It was tempting to take 166 to 33 but the news mentioned that was shut down too.
When it was all said and done, a normally 6 hour drive became 11 hours of driving. Ugh!
