Hush Trips

Never. I get called for something even when I’m off or sick, some days. Work can get busy as is, not to mention I don’t feel right lollygagging outside of workplace while on the clock.

A Disney trip, I don’t see how that would fly for me personally.

We aren't covered by our insurance is we are away from our duty station but haven't informed the organization, so this wouldn't fly. We could set up remote work (working from outside the duty station) for Florida (or wherever) and then not work, I guess. But, like others, I'm assumed to be available during work hours (unless I've mentioned an appointment or somesuch), so still wouldn't really work.

I just heard this term and realized I did this the last couple of years.

A hush trip is a trip where you are technically not off the clock, but you don't go in to the office.

This was our last Disney trip in late April. I have to admit, it was great! My work never knew. I worked and then hit the parks.

Have you done a "hush trip"
We call it a “workation”. It’s an official thing in our company you are allowed for weeks per year were you are allowed to work remotely more remote outside of our country. So technically, I could rent a house on the beach in Spain during the summer and work from there. The reality is a bit different though as you’re still required to fulfill business needs I know one colleague that does it show the RV make sure that she has Wi-Fi and she’ll work from the beaches near Lisbon for two weeks.

I am allowed to work fully remotely and have rented a house and worked from there but my boss knew and I worked my regular hours. We had someone do what you mentioned and they could tell they were not logged in and were not available for a last minute client meeting and they were fired. When it came up with my coworkers, everyone considered it stealing from the company and agreed they should have been let go.

I think this must be a term for those who aren't supposed to do what some of you seem to be allowed to do. I am not allowed to do it, but I have done it. If they knew they would probably make me take days off, but they never found out.

I've never had a job where work from home was a possibility.

The only people I personally know who've done it have permission from their employers and have done it to be near elderly parents during an emergency, etc. It's really a win/win for those kinds of situations. I would think vacations would be more difficult because you'd want to be out doing things.

A good friend of mine's coworker did it and got away with it, but only because she did so little work generally that her superiors didn't see a difference in her productivity. She lost what little credibility she had with her coworkers because they could see her Facebook posts!
