My older dslr, a Nikon d50, died on me. He surprised me and got me a new camera, d5100. It came with a Nikon DX 18-55 3.5-5.6 VR lens and a 55-300 4.5-5.6 ED VR zoom. How do you all like these lenses? I also have, from my old camera, a 50 mm 1.8, which does not seem to autofocus on the new camera, and a Tamron X-RAY Di II LD 17-50 mm 2.8. It's my most expensive lens, and seems to be working okay on the new camera. Anyway, as you can clearly tell, I'm a semi-wannabe-amateur, and I'm not sure if my older stuff works with the new camera.

Any and all input would be appreciated. We're heading to WDW in November and I can't wait to bring my new camera along. Our last trip my camera was just starting to act up, and I ended up using a point and shoot a lot of the time.

Thanks a bunch!

Debbie

P.S. needless to say, I plan on hanging around here to try and soak up some genius...:)

Nikonians.org has a chart that tells you which lenses loose what functionality on that body. There are a number that will not auto focus on it but are perfectly usable with manual focus.

I had the D5100. I thought it was a great camera. The only reason I sold it was to move to the Nex 7. The reason the 50 won't work is because there is no focus motor built into the body like on the D90 or D7000. You need to use lenses with built in focus motor such as the AF-S Nikon lenses. The 35 f1.8 is an outstanding little lens for around 200 dollars.

Nikon also now makes a 50 f/1.8 G-type AF-S lens that will autofocus on your 5100. Not as inexpensive as the older version, but not too bad -- about $217 new from B&H Photo.

I'd give that 35mm f/1.8 a close look prior to deciding, however -- both are great, but you might find the 35 a more useful focal length depending on your shooting style.
