Hurricane's in New England - Insurance question

OK, I think I'm getting dizzy reading this thread LOL... I am worried about two things... Wind damage & flooding caused from the rain from the sky... would we be covered under normal coverage?

There's absolutely no possibility of flooding caused by rivers, surges or anything of that nature.... We have no tree's near us, but 100 feet away or so....

What do you think?

The way it was explained to us was that flooding is any water damage caused by pools of water. Like if the water builds up enough and comes in through the bottom of the doors - that's flooding.

You don't need a tree anywhere near you to lose your roof. A strong wind will pry it right off if it's not well anchored. You should be covered for this.

Flooding can happen when the ground becomes so over saturated that the water has to go somewhere, and it will pore through the pourous cement you cinder block basement is made of. Unles you ahve flood insurance you will not be covered for this.

Eeyore'thebest. Did your husband hear the reports on T.V and the News about the chance of a major hurricane hitting the North East Coast ?
Yes, my DH heard the forecast. I'm heavily insured and do plan on moving all the photo albums etc. to the trunk of the car if something is coming. Otherwise, I try to think of things as just "stuff" that can always be rebuilt or replaced. Sentimental stuff gets packed and taken with us - learned that with Hurricane Floyd. We took about 15 feet of water.
Just remember those that are thinking of flood insurance, there are two types - structural and content. Structure will cover your home, furnace, hot water heater, built ins such as dishwasher, stove. Content will cover your washer/dryer microwave (if not built in) and other items. It will not cover items in your basement (except washer/dryer). Just be sure to read the policy fully and speak to your agent on the fine details.

I'm sorry, but why would you put your pictures in your car? I have seen pictures of floods, and I don't think a car will save them.

It will if you move the car (and yourself) out of the area. I've been through Hurricane Floyd and if anyone doesn't think NJ was hit hard, think again. There are approximately 500 homes in my section of town, referred to as "The Valley". There were approximately 10 homes that did not get flooded. Homes were taken off foundations, had blown in foundation walls, etc. That was just my section of town. Trust me, if a hurricane or tropical storm is coming we prepare and leave the area.

LOL! :thumbsup2 uh duh. yeah, I guess that would work then. Why I thought you would put your photo's in your car, just so your car can get buried in water. :confused3

I was just thinking of all the pictures on the news I have seen with flooding. People sitting on rooves, canoeing down the street, ect. It just doesn't look like a lot of people evacuate.

So for my ignorance.

No problem Disney1fan2002. :goodvibes Alot of people stayed during our flood as well. I was pregnant and had my 2 DSDs with me, no way I was staying! Of course my sister was our "safe house" and she lost power for a week. :faint:
