Leaving on Friday from Savannah GA, as long as the tropical storm doesn't affect our departure. Hope to get into Oahu before Hurricane Lester hits the islands. Can't believe that hurricanes are lining up at our departure location and our arrival in Hawaii. What are the odds of this happening?

I am ill that this is happening. So much planning, reservations, splurge on first class seats for this special 25th anniversary. May try to get out a day early, though work will be an issue. All we can do is pray.

uggh. I think you'll be fine once you get here. No one on Oahu seems particularly worried, as most hurricanes don't hit directly. I think you'll be ok on friday landing here though.

Dont worry, buffettgirl is a Hawaii local resident and is totally correct. We were at Aulani in August 2014 when double hurricanes happened and it was actually a blessing in disguise. The resort was VERY quiet because many people cancelled after listening to the fear mongering weather reports! In the course of two back to back hurricanes, we had one day of rain. Yes, it was a full day of rain which is unusual for Hawaii but it was warm, the pools were open and almost empty and it was one of the best days of our entire trip. The Big Island tends to get most of the bad weather first and by the time it reaches Oahu it is just rain.

Except this one is going to hit more directly....sorry to be Johnny raincloud :D

HOWEVER, I always said that I wanted to go to DW after a hurricane b/c of the low crowds.

We leave on 9/15 for Aulani and I've been closely watching these hurricanes that have been coming close to Hawaii over the last few weeks. I hear that hurricanes are rare out there but it seems pretty active this season, unfortunately. I did hear this morning on the news that the one hurricane is tracking north and the other is tracking south, so they don't expect one to actually make landfall but they said it could bring as much as 15 inches of rain! That puts a big damper on a trip too. Don't know if it means all across the state or only certain islands though?

Whatever happens, safe travels and fingers crossed it all works out for you!

Yes but it is going to hit the Big Island first-not Oahu, if it does hit and because of that trajectory the winds will die down and hopefully the storm itself will dissipate into just rain

Edited to add-I just looked at the update and Madeline is now a category 2 storm rather than a 3

"Big Island residents are stocking up on food and water.

Madeline was a category 3 hurricane earlier but the storm is losing strength."

If it makes you feel better, I'm in the exact same situation. We leave Friday as well. First trip to Hawaii and complicated travel plans for us. Keeping my fingers crossed for us both!

Same situation here. We're scheduled to leave to Kauai on Friday for our first real vacation in two and a half years. Really hoping both storms track south, both for everyone's safety & for our travel plans!

Yeah, the big island is going to get hit with this first one today, oahu might get some wind later tonight. The next one is going to go north and that also will really only impact the big island. I don't even think we're under a hurricane watch or warning here in Oahu at all. Oahu is like 200+ miles from the big island of Hawaii. Think of the distance between Boston and New York City. We're more than that. Weather changes a lot over those distances. So just because something is going to hit Hawaii, it doesn't mean it's going to even touch Oahu. Last summer 10 of these things skirted the islands. Same thing every time. Hawaii gets the brunt, Oahu gets nothing much other than a little rain and wind.

As for low crowds, these are islands, and cities. People don't just not show up for life because of a storm. They're not going to effect the crowds. Truthfully, I"m more worried about road closures the next 2 days for this big environmental summit. POTUS is coming in today and will be here for a few days. I'm hoping I get my son from school before they start shutting down roads.

We are here now, leaving Friday. We did bump our flight home by one day since the airlines offered with no change fee. Friday is suppose to be very mild. It seems Aulani has its own special weather. Friends said it was raining in the Waikiki area yesterday and we didn't get any of it here. Looking out our window now (6:00am) there are no clouds and the same breeze as every other day we've been here. Fingers crossed for continues good weather. Wishing all of us safe travels!

Everyone still leaving today? the airline can move our flight, but not until Monday. :( Am I being paranoid? Landlocked person here, so I know I very well may be.

We decided to cancel our trip. Trying to rebook for Feb. Our flights are still going (apparently), but we'd arrive in Kauai a few hours before the storm is supposed to start impacting there. We figured we didn't want to risk staying in our beach front hotel on the eastward side of the island, and also we figure we'd spend 2-3 days of our 5 night vacation stuck in a hotel room. Really really sad about it but we just don't feel like taking the risk.

Today is perfectly calm here. If you're planning to come to oahu in the next 24 hours you'll be fine. The storm is now moving more north so the impact is going to be very minimal on Oahu on Saturday. other islands might be getting more, but it's turned enough so that they're lifting all the hurricane watches that were issued.

And as of today, nothing is under any hurricane watch or warning. Hopefully most of you kept your travel plans.

Totally regretting cancelling our trip. Looks like weather in Kauai is beautiful this weekend. Hope to reschedule for another trip there soon.

Yep. There's been really nothing much of anything for weather. It was supposed to be rainy all day today on oahu, and parts were, but it was hot and sunny all day at my house. Which sucks, because I cancelled my labor day cookout.

Got home yesterday from a magical trip to Aulani and Oahu. Got out of Savannah the day before the hurricane arrived, and Hurricane Lester never hit the islands. Cam home to a few branches down and a part of our fence leaning over but that was it. Will try to post a trip report this weekend.
