Hurricane- why the prayers?

Isn't praying supposed to be asking God (or whoever you believe in) to help the poor people in the wrath of this horrible storm? So if Katrina is God's doing, people asking him to please spare the people in the hurricane's path, seems pretty logical to me.

Oh jeez, I can't. Praying doesn't bother anyone and to suggest it's a waste of time is ignorant. I'm sure there are many people who want to help but can't. I would usually get worked up over comments like that, but when you consider the source and her "scientific studies", it's not worth it

I pray because my personal belief system holds that when Jesus taught the disciples to pray with the Lord's Prayer, he was telling us that God does and will listen and respond to our desires. My belief says that our prayers are not always answered positively in a manner that is clear to us, and I may not understand why God allows some things to happen -- but that doesn't mean my prayers are not heard.

I don't pray for the storm to move one way or another. I pray that people face whatever happens without abject fear and pain and that God helps those that are most unable to help themselves.

I have to laugh whenever I read a answer or thread started by the questioner. I have such a mental image of this person.....a young girl (although I think she is a he) but whatever. That really gets a thrill out of getting a rise out of other people (there is a name for people like that isn't there-LOL). I feel sorry for you especially having the need to write posts like this during difficcult times. I understand and like a good debate but these are live events that are happening to peoples lives and property and to start threads like this when peoples emotions are high is rude and I have no respect for someone that does that. DH and I were discussing this last night.

After going through direct hits of two hurricanes last year, we felt blessed not to suffer any loss of life among our family and friends.

We don't pray that a hurricane go anywhere, we pray that people are kept safe and there is no loss of life. Property can be replaced, people can't.

I completely agree with this. I never pray for the hurricane to go elsewhere (even when it is headed directly at me). I always pray for everyone's safety.

Seriously, though, why so mean? If you don't agree, then just say so. If you don't like the topic, move on. No need for name calling. There are actually people in this world who don't see the point of praying. Can't this be discussed among people who feel like discussing it (those who don't moving on to other threads)? Yes someone answered a similar question on the other thread, but that's only one school of thought on prayer. And no-one on that thread really addressed the people who DO pray for disasters to go elsewhere and affect other people (yes, I do know none of you would dream of doing that!).

Also, that other thread is down on page 3 and hasn't had a reply to it since 9.21 a.m. (at least at the time of my posting) - this thread was started after noon! You all are acting as though there is a *current* thread about the same thing. Isn't it possible that there are actually people who haven't seen that other thread until it was posted as a link in this one?

Anyway, I am not usually argumentative (most of the time anyway), but I am seeing a lot of acrimony on this thread today, and I'm not sure why that is. It doesn't really make sense to me, and I thought maybe I'm missing something?

I hear from all kinds of people that are praying about the Hurricane. Some are praying that the Hurricane will go further east (so their home will be spared, but of course people they do not know, who live further east, will be affected). Others are praying that the Hurricane will go west! Others are praying that the City of New Orleans will not be flooded.

In all honesty, isn't all these prayers really a waste of time? The Hurricane is God's will and will go the direction and speed determined by mother nature (God). It is all part of God's plan. Some will live- some will die. Since the dawn of time millions of people have died in Hurricanes, many more will die in the future. Does someone crying and praying really going to make much difference?

While I agree with your point, I think during a time when there will very well be major loss of life, property, and every single belonging that some people own, now is not the time to be flip or "funny" about saying a prayer or the power of prayer for someone in their time of need - that's why everyone's so upset and jumps on this "person" who has nothing else to offer the DIS except aggravation.

And yes, i'm sure the Red Cross will be getting Questioneer's donation first thing tomorrow, right???

I know emotions are running high and people are sensitive. I understand that. I still don't condone the name calling though. Are people going to jump down my throat too because I am not praying? I don't pray, and I won't start now because it wouldn't be sincere - but that doesn't mean I don't feel deeply for all of those people on the Gulf Coast and all of their families and friends around the world who are worrying about them! I live in the hurricane belt as well, and this could well happen to me one day. Just because people don't pray doesn't mean they don't care and aren't going to help where they can.

Questioner may well like to stir up trouble, and the best response to that IMO is to just ignore. Otherwise you're just feeding the flames.

Now I guess I should take my own advice and get out of this thread before *I* get burned too!
