Hurricane- why the prayers?

I hear from all kinds of people that are praying about the Hurricane. Some are praying that the Hurricane will go further east (so their home will be spared, but of course people they do not know, who live further east, will be affected). Others are praying that the Hurricane will go west! Others are praying that the City of New Orleans will not be flooded.

In all honesty, isn't all these prayers really a waste of time? The Hurricane is God's will and will go the direction and speed determined by mother nature (God). It is all part of God's plan. Some will live- some will die. Since the dawn of time millions of people have died in Hurricanes, many more will die in the future. Does someone crying and praying really going to make much difference?

I would rather spend my time helping the Red Cross clean up the damage and let the survivors move on.

Please explain the logic of all these prayers.

Obviously it all boils down to belief and these people feel prayer will help them. You feel that it is God's will. I feel it is just a hurricane and nobody is making it happen. Why knock it? Even if prayer is something that will simply help people make it through, who cares?

You seem to be the one with flawed logic. I've been working (volunteering) since Friday night making all sorts of coordination arrangements, and while I'm typing away I can say a quick prayer for people and animals affected by this disaster.

Why do you really care if people pray or not, if it's what comforts them? Maybe YOU should be the one doing volunteer work rather than spewing a string of pompous drivel.

DH and I were discussing this last night.

After going through direct hits of two hurricanes last year, we felt blessed not to suffer any loss of life among our family and friends.

We don't pray that a hurricane go anywhere, we pray that people are kept safe and there is no loss of life. Property can be replaced, people can't.
