Always gone to Disney in July and August and always had a mixed bag of weather. But on our last trip we got caught up in a hurricane we ended up staying in Disney foe an extra week because we could'nt get a flight home (not such a bad thing)
For us we were lucky as the hurricane hit on our supposed last day, but i felt sorry for the people who were just starting their holiday as many parts of Florida had no power. This year we are going in December is hurricane season over bt then?

I thought if a hurricane hit Disney was only down for a little while, but you were stranded for a week! My goodness that throws the plans into disarray, what do you do for extra cash, accommodation, time off work etc. I'm getting worried now about being there during the hurricane season, although of course thousands of people are there too and are OK. I thought if one hit it would be a minor inconvenience and waiting for it to pass but a week OMG

Hurricane season is over by December so you should be OK.

Lizzy Lemon - I wouldn't worry too much. If you are staying on Disney you will be perfectly safe, they take very good care of you during a hurricane. They have there own generators so you dont even notice if power has been lost else where. However if you are staying off site the loss of power will be a bigger problem for you, no air-con or tv to keep updated on the storm. Just be prepared have plenty of supplies (water, crisps, non perisable goods, torch or candles, etc) to keep you going until you can get out again.

It can be frightening if it is your first trip or first hurricane. We seem to attract hurricanes and have been there for the last few big ones even evacuated from our hotel on the coast for Frances. To be honest when the weather hits it was no worse than a blustery day down on Blackpool prom. As long as you follow the guidance given you will be OK.

Thanks Jools - just got to get over the fear of flying, worry of hurricanes, worrying about my children being bored on the flight, anxious about having enough spending money, hoping our booking is all OK and our requests have been met, making my ADR's etc etc . Would you guess I'm a worrier :rotfl2:

sorry to frighten you!
We could'nt get a flight out because we had done all the travel arrangements ourselves and not through a tour operator. We were flying via Washinton with Bmi and BMI only fly into Washington so many days of the week. We could of got a flight out in a day or two but we would have had to stay in Washington until our flight came in. We decided to stay put..
As for money and accomodation that's another story. We were'nt staying at a disney hotel but in a villa and on the morning we left it was in a terrible mess
No power so none of the bed linnen and towels were clean, the fridge etc were off and so was the pool filter. The pool was full of leaves branches etc and the pool screen was damaged. I felt really sorry for the people who were comming in after us because i know the power was down for a good 4 to 5 days. After being turned away from the airport we stayed in a hotel in maingate and everything went on our credit cards as i had spent nearly all our money because in my mind i was going home (spend, spend, spend). We did have a few days left on our park tickets so we used them up and as Disney do you would'nt of known a hurricane had been through town. PLease don't let this worry you. In a bizzare kind of way we enjoyed it we made sure we had all the supplies we needed and kept ourselves safe following the guide lines fro the news. Our son who was 5 at the time thought it was great as Twister was one of his favourite rides. In fact at the worst point of the huricane he was sound asleep. It has'nt put us off as we are going again this year although this time in December (and that's not because of the huricane season but of because of circumstances. I hope you have a really great time.

I'm not really that worried, I've waited too long to go to WDW to worry about a little bit of wind! Seriously though you sound really laid back and take things in your stride kind of person, I wish I was the same. Daren't even book the holiday without a TA but next time I'm going to pluck up courage. Thanks for your concern. Envy your December holiday, I would love to see the Xmas decs but DH is a postman and no leave is allowed that time of year.

Hi

Hurricanes can be a bit scary if you do not know what to expect. We have been in Orlando twice when they have struck. Floyd and then Jeanne had us confined to our hotel room. When they came they really were not that bad. The hotels had generators and the worst part was we couldn't enjoy Disney for a couple of days. After the event you wouldn't really have known they had passed through. As someone said Blackpool on areally wild day isn't too much unlike a hurricane in many ways. Don't worry about anything when going to the World, it is the greatest place to have a holiday! Have a great time.
