Up to Cat 2 now. Raining and windy here is So Dade. Some ponding in the street but house is high and dry. At least the winds aren't blowing water under the door like Katrina. Schools will open tomorrow but I am not sure on my school as it is a shelter. Depends on when they close the shelter.
The good news is that we are leaving the Austin area on Thursday for Orldando and our first family trip to WDW. The bad news is that it looks like the storm will cause Thunderstorms in Orlando for the majority of our trip.
I read a story (CNN if I remember right) where a 42 year old nurse said she and her husband were planning on riding out the storm. They are in Galveston. She said they have food and water to last 10 days. If they need to they will get on their roof. The city is 8 feet above sea level and has 17 foot flood walls. They expect a storm surge of 50 feet. What is she thinking?
RITA APPEARS TO HAVE REACHED ITS PEAK INTENSITY DURING THE PAST
12 HOURS. HURRICANES TYPICALLY DO NOT MAINTAIN SUCH HIGH INTENSITY
FOR A LONG TIME. INITIAL INTENSITY ESTIMATE IS 145 KNOTS. ALTHOUGH
SOME FLUCTUATIONS IN INTENSITY ARE LIKELY DURING THE NEXT DAY OR
TWO...DUE TO EYEWALL REPLACEMENT CYCLES...AN OVERALL GRADUAL
WEAKENING TREND SHOULD TAKE PLACE. THIS WEAKENING TREND IS BASED ON
LOWER OCEANIC HEAT CONTENT ALONG THE FORECAST TRACK AND INCREASING
SHEAR. NEVERTHERELESS...RITA IS EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL AS A
DANGEROUS HURRICANE OF AT LEAST A CATEGORY THREE INTENSITY.
