Just a heads up if you are heading down here to Florida at the end of this week. Unless there is a change in conditions, Hurricane Irene will directly impact central Florida. Go to NOAA to track the storm if you have any plans to fly into Orlando Friday or Saturday. Just a heads up. We haven't had a storm here in a while, so just think ahead.

That's the essential problem with hurricane predictions. They mostly just track where they are, project a "cone of uncertainty" path, and then follow along.

Pays to be aware of course, but until perhaps 24 hours away, they won't know if it will hit Florida or not. And if it does, where? Right at Orlando, or simply hug the coast??

I recall a few years ago when a hurricane was supposed to hit and totally destroy Galveston TX. The night before, some reporter from the Weather Channel was on Galveston Island, and stated that "tomorrow mornng, Galveston as we know it will cease to exist".

That very night, the hurricane changed paths, missed Galveston and I think ended up near Houston.

A little premature to call it a hurricane as it is only a tropical storm at the moment. Once (if) it moves over Cuba, it could lose a lot of power and remain just a tropical storm and never hit hurricane status.

But it is good to make plans just in case. Hopefully we won't have a busy year and see one in November! :thumbsup2

"Pretty certain" and "Hurricane forecasting" in the same sentence? Now that may not be rumor but it is surely folly.

I am not sure why this is in the rumor board.. :confused3 but looks pretty certain it will be a hurricane when it hits Puerto Rico and Dom. Rep. As well as an est for a Hur while hitting Cuba and back to a tropical storm by Fri hitting FL.

It's on the rumors and NEWS board. This storm would be considered news for those living in, or headed to Florida. News that may be of interest to them.

My personal prediction, looking at the charts and analysis, it that it will affect Central Florida from late Thursday afternoon through mid-afternoon on Friday.

I have noticed that there has been no course change for the last 3 days, so stay aware if you live here in Florida, or if you are planning on flying in later this week

You're as bad as the doomsday fanatics on the news channels!:happytv:

As of 8pm it has tracked a bit north and is still a long, long, long, long way from here ... And particularly Orlando, which will never feel the brunt of a storm approaching from the south like this.

But it is fun to get the tourists all upset. And, as a friend recently asked: "If it's Tourist Season, what's my limit?"

Did you see the giant sink hole that swallowed up the entire road going into MK toll plaza? They are saying that MK is going to be closed until at least July while they build some sort of bridge over it.

I always wanted to be some sort of a fanatic.................

Boy I sure hope it avoids WDW...it would ruin the magic and make all the little kids so sad:sad2:

Wishes and Magic!!! XOXOXO!

...nah...i'm just kidding...though not about hoping it doesn't affect central florida as well.
We have a house we rent that was bought pre-bubble that shot up and then down like a ride on the Hulk...so now its worthless because of the gullible mortgage recipients in those parts...and the banker/realtor scumbag quotient being off the charts. ( It was bought over a decade ago at a reasonable price...in a great area...and now would sell for probably 20-25% less and wouldn't make a dime...true story)
It's a dog and i don't want to put anymore into it.

Take a left turn there, I!!!

Well, I'd love to take credit but I was just quoting Jimmy Buffet after all.

Hey guys -

Remember hurricane Floyd early in DCL history. It flattened Castaway Cay. I was in the travel biz and had guests on the Magic that fall. The Magic would pull into Castaway Cay, drop off construction supplies and then leave. It was heartbreaking for the guests and very sad photos. Castaway Cay was closed for a long time.

Looks like that will be the problem child for Disney with Irene.

Now I'm here in Annapolis. Felt the big shake today....my dog is still hiding under the bed. Now the local officials are beginning to get their knickers in a knot because of the possibility of Irene coming up the Chesapeake Bay.

I'm here taking care of my 90 year old mother on chemo so we are off to the doctor tomorrow to make sure if she needs anything (blood transfusion is my worry-blood counts can drop amazingly fast) that we do it before Saturday. Then I'll get all her meds in order. Freeze a few blocks of ice in case we loose power so I can keep her medicine chilled. Tomorrow afternoon I'll head over to Home Depot to get what I need for the house and if it looks really bad later in the week, water and food that Mom will eat (she is a challenging eater on chemo).

Um.......happy your vacations are going to be fine.....I have a different perspective up here in reality land.

I think the "projected path" of Irene has changed--yet again.

And we felt a bit of a tremor here in Glen Rock Pa.--lasted about 5-6 seconds.
