HURRICANE INFORMATION (AUGUST 15, 2004): All parks except TL are OPEN

The Weather Channel just reported there will be no arrivals or departures at the Orlando Airport until noon.

Typhoon Lagoon and Animal Kingdom will be closed August 14th.

All other WDW parks are open.

Typhoon Lagoon and Animal Kingdom will be closed today. Aug 14th.

All other WDW operations are opening at 9 am.

I am @ Downtown Disney right now getting latest info.

MSNBC reported that part of the roof in the Main Terminal blew off but they had no real estimates on damage.

Alright, time to start rebuilding...

Does anyone know who (Red Cross, etc) will be taking donations for these poor people? I have boxes of clothes ready to be donated to the Salvation Army, I'll just as happily send them to Fl. If anyone knows or hears on the news, please let us know.

Thanks-
Erin :D

Hi All-

Does anyone know how the animals at AKL and AK came through the storm? People are obviously more important, but I am a softy for animals and I am so worried for all of them who rode out this storm.

Thanks!
Erin

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear that WDW rode out thestorm well.
I hope that everyone in the area is safe. According to a post on the cruise line board, the Doubletree Hotel in DTD sustained damage losing the hotel exterior facade, leaving the girders exposed.

My prayers are with everyone in the area and all along the coast as Charley moves north.

I read yesterday on the Orlando Sentinel page that the animals were all being brought into the barns yesterday morning.

It also said that a few of the savannah animals - some antelope and giraffes were being allowed to stay out, but that their barns were open should they choose to come in. It said that the harsh conditions were actually similar to what they'd experience on the plains sometimes, and that some of the animals liked it.

I'd imagine that if there was any chance the animals would be hurt, they would have called them in. I got the impression that the few that were allowed to stay out, were not in an area with any trees. But I could be wrong.

That report was yesterday around 1pm, so, they might have changed their minds about leaving some animals out once they knew the storm had gotten worse.

Disney just made a statement that all animals were fine and all rides were functioning.

That was Busch Gardens that planed to leave some animals out. Animal Kingdom moved all animals in to their night houses.

I'm sure they are all fine. They have shelters for the animals for times like this. That's why the park was closed yesterday and also today. It is the Animal Kingdom, after all. With the animals tucked safely away, there's not much else.

I just heard on TWC that Orlando will be accepting arrivals and having departures at noon today. That is good news for those stuck in limbo out there.

Just a note on donations!

Please go thur your boxes and make sure anything you might donate is useful in Florida.

After Hugo (or was it Andrew?) came ashore in Miami several years ago I spent two nights working at the sorting facility at the fairgrounds (I had gone done on business and stayed to work!) By night two I was a supervisor, if I had stayed longer who knows what i would have done.

Stuff arrived by the tractor trailer from other parts of the country and we sorted and shipped down to Homestead.

We were OVERWHELMED with clothes. I have a feeling that 99.9% of them were just destroyed. However, I was amazed that people thought that hurricane victims in Florida in AUGUST needed, wool jackets, long johns, scarves, gloves, their old ratty underwear. I think some people just had Goodwill boxes ready already and dumped them into these tractor trailers.

Personally I now just donate to the Red Cross.

If your area is doing a drive for goods these were really needed when I worked there.

Baby supplies (diapers, food, pedalyte etc.)
Feminine supplies
Cleaning supplies!!!!

This just in...all downed trees, etc in WDW will be turned in to gift shops and/or topiaries by noon today.

Joking aside, I am so thankful all seems to be well at WDW. My prayers remain with all in FLA. Thanks to the DISers who kept everyone so well informed. This is a wonderful community.

Not sure I believe that MCO will be opening at noon..... Just talked to United and they have cancelled everything from Dulles down today but a ~5 pm flight tonight (don't know why that hasn't been cancelled yet). Reservationist said to watch that flight - if it goes off, we're probably OK to go tomorrow a.m. If not, who knows..... So far haven't seen any other airlines show a flight actually going into or out of MCO today. If it wasn't for the storm coming up the East Coast, I'd seriously think about getting into the car this afternoon - but this doesn't look like a storm to drive in if you can help it!

The President of the American Red Cross was just on Fox news and they are asking for monetary donations rather than water, food, clothing, etc. It's too difficult for them to coordinate the receiving, storage and distribution of donated items.

You can donate to the ARC Disaster Relief Fund by calling 1 (800) HELP NOW (435-7669).

dh and i have been heartsick while watching this unfold on tv, have been sick and not to the boards a couple days but there is a lot of info here to catch up on, thanks to dis-ers who kept everyone up to date on this horrifying storm.

i am worried about the all CM's :( i will be emailing one who is a concierge at GF who lives in the area i hope her house wasn't too badly damaged. i know it will likely be awhile before i hear from her with the power being out in so many areas but everyone please think good things and wish for lots of comfort for all the residents of FL today. And if you can, please donate to the red cross. the governor was asking people not to send physical supplies like clothing because it creates a logistical nightmare for them and the aid doesn't get where its really needed but $ can help them right away.
