Hurricane Hilary expected to reach California this weekend

First & foremost I would like to state that I hope everyone stays safe, and I sincerely hope there is minimal property damage.
That said…

I will chuckle at the general fear, as long as the above holds true.
Karma sucks. I remember some years back when the east coast experienced a small earthquake (by California standards). Easterners were talking about it, and the Californians were laughing (nobody here specifically).
Now the shoe is on the other foot. You have a tropical storm bearing down upon you, where we Floridians have major hurricanes thrown at us right & left.

Again, I truly hope you are all safe, and property is spared.

The most deadly impact from a tropical cyclone is water. A large slow moving tropical storm dropping a lot of water in areas not used to it can cause plenty of death and destruction. Storm category is kind of misleading as it's only a measure of storm windspeed / pressure. Based on size, how fast or slowly the storm is moving, the amount of rainfall, and the area impacted, you can get tropical storms that can cause plenty of damage and dangerous conditions. It's not a competition for who gets worse natural disasters, and it's natural to be more fearful of something you don't experience often. Personally I find many on the east & gulf coast are so used to hurricanes and tropical storms that they foolishly don't always take them seriously enough - especially when they're 'only' a tropical storm, or cat 1 or 2.

Many years ago traveling in CA, chatting with some CA residents I had met at a campground, they said they would never want to live in the eastern US because of the hurricanes. I couldn't imagine how they were comfortable living with an unpredictable major earthquake happening, but wouldn't be comfortable in a hurricane area where you can at least see the approach from several days out and evacuate. For me, completely opposite. I'll take the forewarning of a hurricane barreling towards us over a random earthquake any day! It's all about what you're familiar with.

I hope everyone is doing okay out there!!

Well, Hillary did not disappoint! 24 straight hours of rain, and at 7 pm Sunday all broke loose with high winds and heavy rain. The storm kept us up most of the night. It's now 7 am and so far we have seen flooding, trees down, water rescues, and now total white out. Schools closed throughout the area. Wild! We also had a 5.1 earthquake on Sunday....a hurriquake!

Thank God all dry here this morning and calm. Dad and I are so blessed. No more earthquakes either! 🙏 all of you enjoy a calmer day, too. Thank you all again for keeping all of us, especially here in LA, company yesterday virtually and for your extra prayers and support. I appreciate all of you. Stay safe and absolutely this was a great reminder to plan ahead and make sure you have needed supplies for a weather emergency. Also, pre pandemic, I remember intending you create for my car an overnight bag of clothing and supplies just to have if ever needed. That might be a good idea, too. Include, of course, a first aid kit and extra water/nonperishables. Wishing all of you a calmer and good Monday:grouphug:

Looking at the Monday morning aftermath (literally), rain and wind were not as bad as expected. Some downed trees, some flooding, but we've seen much worse in our winter storms. Best of all, no deaths that I've heard of. Oh, and since you mentioned earthquakes, we had one of those too. A 5.1 in Ojai, a wine region just east of Ventura. We felt it but I think for anybody outside of Ojai, we weren't even sure it was an earthquake. The news crews were giddy all day. We were told to stay off the roads and for the most part people did - except the news crews. Each station had a news truck driving around on the freeways all day surveying damage and looking for tragedy. I had to laugh when the earthquake hit - you just know the news crews were ready to head home when - woops! Time for a 2 hour drive to Ojai.

Biggest effect for me is I was in Portland when the storm started to roll in. Southwest pre-emptively cancelled several flights, especially those headed to and from Las Vegas - and our flight was to connect in Las Vegas. Oh well - we got another day in Portland and it was gorgeous up there. I imagine if Southwest had not taken such a beating last Christmas all flights would have just flown as scheduled - none of the other carriers canceled any flights.

One “the sky is falling” newscaster recommended staying home. Have groceries or take out food delivered, he said.

Yeah, stay safe yourself but let the peons risk THEIR lives. :sad2:

Really? Doesn't sound logical.

As for the storm, it definitely has caused chaos with flooded roads and various washes collecting debris. I hear that several roads/highways around Palm Springs are flooded and impassible.

Pretty sure they pre-emptively closed those roads prior to the storm. If you go in via old-town Palm Springs that road is OK, but if you bypass that and come in over by the casino those roads go through a wash and it's designed to take the flood.

This is true. I have relatives in Rancho Mirage and was told when roads were preemptively shut down, with just one freeway exit left open. Some roads in the desert are flooded, but yes, roads in and out were closed early.

Southwest cancelling flights? What a shocker. I flew out of LAX Sunday . I was prepared for my flight to cancel, but everything was going out on time for AA. There were some short gate holds, but nothing drastic.

When we did fly on Sunday (yes, during the storm, not the day before like we were scheduled) there were a ton of Southwest planes parked up at SMF. Southwest had cancelled all flights from PDX to LAS but not anywhere else. When we landed in LGB we noticed that there were a number of flights cancelled flying to OAK too but OAK was out of the storm window, so 🤷‍♂️. It looked to us like they were following some sort of algorithm to re-position crews to minimize the cancellations. Little did they know they could have just flown the routes as scheduled - the airports never closed anywhere.

True dat, and besides, it's boneheaded advice anyway. If roads are closed or flooded, delivery is a no-go.

You go out, you get the necessities you don't already have (including a hand axe, in case of flash flooding), and THEN you hunker down.
