Hurricane Earl

SGB13 - Best of luck and hope everything goes well...stay safe. We are all glued to the news up here because we are in line for a direct hit on Saturday. In the mean time, the heat here is unbearable 41C/106F yesterday, so hopefully the air will clear a little after that. Stay safe!!

I welcome any changes to the weather...even Earl. This heat is just ridiculous.

It is a pity for the apple/peach growers in the area, though. It's just about peaking now, with the earlier varieties already being offered. Guess it'll be a good year for cider...

From this mornings report, Earl will be coming our way sometime early tomorrow morning ( like 2am) and lasting through the afternoon. It upgraded to a Cat 4 and they expect winds around here to be between 50-75 MPH...luckily it's still going to stay off shore..... My best wishes for everyone in the path...stay safe.

Ok, silly question...I'm not the best with all of this storm tracking.

I am flying from NY to Charlotte, NC tonight around 6:30.....Do you think I will be ok? :rolleyes1

We have plans to go to the outer banks in October.

I hope the house we will be renting is not damaged!

Earl is off shore now, it's down to a Cat 2, but the wind is not bad at all....and there's not much rain either...just some small bands. As it goes up north, it's expected to turn further out to sea....

Funny, I can into work at 7 this morning, and I'm the only one here still....could be a quiet day...good time to get some stuff done with no interuptions.....

I am by now means a meteorologist but I work for an insurance company who cover NAT CAT perils in the US and we dont appear to be worried. (although were talking big companies losses, not private dwellings)

Normally if they are worried about a current storm I will be asked to run predictions of claims, but I havent with EARL.

Ive noticed on a the website though that the warning has increased slightly on the coast of NC and it appears the the path goes further inland up the coast than it did yesterday - but common sense tells you that changes by the hour

Good Luck to you all though - fingers crossed it passes with none or very minimal damage

You also have a new storm called GASTON following Fiona today (tiny in comparison)

Thanks for sharing your perspective, that's interesting...and I really hope you are right. We are worried for our East Coast as our news is saying they need to brace for Earl. Stay safe all! :goodvibes

As they always say, be sure to check with your airline! I'm just outside of NYC, it's partly cloudy (also partly sunny) here right now. I just looked at the weather for Charlotte - it's supposed to be HOT, sunny and HOT!!

Supposed to hit here as a category 1 and hopefully drop to tropical storm status as it rushes by my house.

So I've brought in provisions....
Extra batteries....check
Extra propane.....check
Chips and dip.....check
Skittles.....check
Gin.....double check :woohoo:

Put everything away that could blow around here and at my parents but there's not much more I can do for the orchard (not enough time for the twist tie plan) but hope it goes more north then east. And it's not so much the apples falling off (they'll stay on in surprisingly strong wind conditions) but more the broken limbs...I've seen orchards up root too.

Oh well, Mother nature will do what she wants I guess....

It was sunny this morning in Central Jersey, but is now getting dark. There are really gloomy clouds pushing in and the wind is picking up. Let's see what happens by tonight. :)

Perhaps Snookie will be washed out to sea. ;)

All they found was a bright orange trail leading out into the water... :lmao:

Well I can't say we're officially hunkering down yet, because that would be a signal to my kids that they can open the chips, but the rain and wind has started.

Earl has slide a little more south of us so we're going to get more rain the wind but power is still going down near us, though so far so good for us. Hopefully there won't be too many outages because at this point they are saying if it goes out don't expect it back until Monday!

On the plus side we really need this rain and it makes me feel like doing laundry for some reason....hope everyone else is doing okay!

Apparently the storm did minimal damage over Cape Cod. I know my company (electric) was geared up for significant damage and a long restoration period, with many crews brought in from out of state. It turns out that, thankfully, that wasn't needed and we reverted to normal operations at 6:00 this morning.
