Reports on Hurricane Charley are all over the news, and I heard this morning that Disney World closed early today in preparation for the storm.

I hope everyone on vacation is safe, as well as those of you who live in Florida and on the east coast.

Did any of you need to come home early, or evacuate your homes?

most of my family lives there. some of them went to the other side of the state but one of my aunts had to evaucitate her apartmant i have been watching the news it looks pretty scary that so many people have had to leave their homes

I live in the heart of Orlando and let me tell you it was one VERY amusing Friday the thirteenth! The winds were crazy!!! We did not have to evacuate out home and we toughed it out in my parent's closet with a battery opperated radio...our power was out for about 8 hours....

Yesterday we went driving around to see the damage and there were trees down EVERYWHERE!!! It was like a warzone. Luckily I live in the part of Orlando with sturdy homes so no one I knew was hurt or homeless, but some that I know still do not have power. Orange County schools are closed until Wednesday which really sucks because we started school just last Monday and a bunch of us weren't ready for such a long break! Florida only schedules one hurricane day and being as we've taken up three it looks as though we won't be getting early Wednesday dismissal this year....Orange County is the only county without school this Monday and Tuesday.

Hope everyone's safe...whether visiting or residing....and I hope everyone everyone knows is safe.

I just missed it! I am going 2 Assateuge Island on the 21st!!:hyper: :bounce: :sunny: :sunny:

My aunt lives in Sarasota, but she used to live in Punta Gorda before my uncle died. She was supposed to come up yesterday, but her flight was cancelled. So she will be in around one today.
On the other hand my friend just move to Florida. She lives in Fort Myers, and I am about to try to call her to make sure that she is alright. I hope so dearly. The only thing that I heard about Fort Myers was that it was evacuated or something. I don't really know.:(

My 2nd cousin lives in Sarasota, and we haven't been able to get in touch with him cause of the phone lines being out, so hopefully he's fine.
My best friend was also in Daytona Beach when the huricane hit. She'll be home tomorrow, and i haven't talked to her either. She drove down with her family, so i know her flight won't be delayed.

what a wierd name 4 a hurricane. Whenever i hear the name i always say 2 myself, "Charlie Brown???" ha ha

I heard that WDW had a lot of damage. I hope that everyone who was in florida at the time (visiting or residing) is ok.

my granfather lives well lived in punta gorda but he was in kansas when it hit and his house is ruined it was totally torn apart so he and his gf have to find a new house somewhere

My best friend's home from Daytona and she told me all about it. Daytona Beach got hit by the eye of the storm (the worst part) in the middle of the night. Part of her hotel roof was ripped off, trees fell on alot of the cars in the parking lot (thankfully not hers), and an exit sign right outside their door was partically ripped off and was banging into their wall all night. Her 10 yr old brother actually slept thru the whole thing! i cant believe that.. lol

My grandmother was telling me how my Aunt's daughter went to look at their old house in Punta Gorda, and it had a few loose shingles and the back porch was ruined a little, but not much. My cousin said that every other house was ruined in Punta Gorda or something like that.

Punta Gorda got the worst of it...and so did many places on the coast....they hadn't expected the eye to come through central florida...how wrong they were! There are still several people without power and school has now been cancelled until NEXT Tuesday...that's a 12 day weekend we've had...it's getting ridiculous...

My family was at WDW when Charley hit. Early Friday morning my family checked out {we were going to stay an extra day} but decied we would try and get on the road before Charley hit.

As we were putting DS and DD in the car, the sercurity guard in a van came by and asked us if we were checked out and leaving. When DH said "Yes", he advised us that I-75, I-95, and I-4 were nothing but bumper to bumper and that we should go back to our room and one of us go back to the front desk and get our room back, that we was just looking out for the best interest for the guest. So DH went back to the front desk and got our room back. While he was gone, I received a call in the room from a guy asking if I was the one the security guard told to go back to the room. When I told him "Yes" the guy told me that he shouldn't have done that, and if we wanted to leave, that the roads won't be closed til 3 of that day. To me what makes the difference what time the roads are closed. We probably would have had to find somewhere to stay, possiably a shelter.

Later I went back out to our van to get some clothes and a couple of other items before the storm hit. The same sercuitry guard came along and asked me about the van {I think he was just trying to make small talk cause some guys in ties were watching him}. I made a comment about the guys he was talking to when I came out to the van and asked him if he got in trouble for what he told us. All he said to me was that he wasn't telling anymore guests that checked out what to do. That is really poor on someone's part!! That security guy saved our lives by telling us to get our room back, that we would be alot safer staying there then being out on the roads. A lady from Tennessee and her family were thinking about doing the samething and joined in our conversion. She told me that the front desk told her that it would be best if they just stayed there cause that way they would have food, water, and electricy. Other hotels around possiably won't have that when the storm hits. The front desk told us nothing.

Disney only had Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and MGM open that day til 1 pm and cause of that was giving people an extra day to use whenever they want. When I went to the front desk and told them that we were not going to the parks, the lady made sure that we received our extra day right then, good til 2013.

Charley is something I would never want to go through again! When Charley hit, I swear this is what I looked like the whole time.......:scared1: We have thunderstorms here in Ohio that can get pretty bad, but not to the point where you can watch trees bend all the way over to the ground. I sure do have a new found respect for people who live in Flordia and put up with that crap.

We will go back to the WDW, but not during hurricane season and will be staying somewhere else besides that All star resorts. DH sure wasn't happy with the very thin walls. LOL!!!
