Hurricane at Disney over Columbus Day Weekend?

I remember stories from the year of the triple hurricane about my mom and sister going to 'the world' on hurricane days off from school (I was away not living at home at the time) and it was so dead they would ride things like Peter Pan multiple times w/o getting off

I know they don't know for sure at this point, but it's at least something to consider.

It's not something to consider.

If you want to contemplate your plans should weather pop up while you're on your way to WDW, do it now and don't ever do it again. You want your plan to watch your airport, the airport you're flying into, and your airline's websites. They will tell you when you can change your flights at no cost. You can plan out how to be ready to go at a moment's notice, if something is truly brewing and you would like to land BEFORE it messes with your flight. You can talk about employment and leaving early. Once you've worked all that out, you can then wash your hands of all the worry and the planning for it, and just go about your daily life (while casually checking websites and possibly packing early). That sort of planning works all year long, because weather on one side of the country can change everything for the other side.

Anyone ever ridden a big hurricane out at Disney?

All of my FL relatives have WDW as their hurricane plan.

Curious, why on earth would someone worry about something that hasn't even formed yet?

If only someone could have answered that question for me a month ago with that "invest 99L" or whatever it was called. It hadn't formed *at all* and people were tweaking about it.

Otherwise, you can search back just a month of so to see the last round of posts on a hurricane in central FL

Exactly.

When we were there for Charley, as each day passed, the parks got busier and busier! After about the third day, post storm, locals started flooding the parks. It was awful! There was no school, many businesses were closed, roads were being reopened. So, to the parks they came. What should have been a less busy time in the parks, due to southern schools being in session, turned into a very crowded time. Now, I'm not saying the locals shouldn't have come to the parks, I'm just telling what happened to us, right after Charley.

Thanks for the feedback. As far as worrying about it now, yes, it's probably overkill, but I live on the Alabama coast and just naturally seem to pay way more attention to "potential" storms than I probably should. It sounds like TS Matthew has formed now and will be ramping up to Hurricane status in the next few days. But depending on which model you believe, it could be out to sea with no problem after the Bahamas or slower and making a Florida landfall. Regardless, I'm reassured enough that unless it involves driving through the hurricane, we'll still plan on going and just see if the park time gets disrupted by it.

That's about all anybody can do, other than cancelling completely. Which is easier when it does not involve airfare; the airlines usually don't allow changing without penalty until they have issued a travel advisory (which means they are pretty sure they know where it's going)

Right now, there is no "timeline" that includes Matthew hitting Orlando. You'll just need to keep an eye on him and see where he goes. Right now, it does not look like he will be in a position to impact your travel, which is the biggest thing to be concerned about. Unless you're coming from Cuba or Jamaica.

Matthew is indeed a storm to keep an eye on. It has a very good chance at becoming a major hurricane (cat 3+), but it's far too early to go into full panic "cancel everything" mode. Computer models for the storm change every few hours. We probably won't have a good idea of the impact to the US (if any) until it reaches Jamaica, and I'd say even that's too early. Keep your eye on the National Hurricane Center.

I'm bad at reading these maps. I know it's to far out to know anything but what's possible timeline for this in Orlando area if it "was" to happen we will be there the 1st to the 8th in kinda concerned
The latest track shows it near Cuba on Monday. Again though, don't believe forecasts that far out.

This is the only Hurricane that I think about at WDW

OP, Orlando is where most of my gulf coast friends "evacuate" to.

Rule #7, don't panic. Hurricane paths change constantly.

We were in the eye of those 2004 hurricanes. During the one, my husband and son went fishing in our backyard since the pond was up to it, until the calm of the eye passed and the 2nd half of the hurricane came.

Hurricane Grille is good too!

Latest track of the newly named TS Mathew has it nowhere near FL on Columbus day. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at4.shtml?5-daynl#contents

That "cone" only goes through this Sunday. Columbus Day is not until Oct. 10th. I was paying attention to the weather since I'm going down this coming weekend.

Those going next week should keep an eye on the forecast but the real track of the storm is not going to be clearer until this weekend (Oct. 1/2) at the earliest I think and any impacts would be on into next week. The weather model runs are all over the place at this point.

Thank you for the correction. Being retired I often loose track of dates. ;)

With your clarification I'd say that the current storm will be long gone by Columbus Day. Of course something else might come up. Fortunately we are approaching the end of the hurricane season.

It is my dream to have at least one trip like this. I wouldn't like to be there during a hurricane if it were my one trip-in-a-lifetime, but otherwise, that would be a blessing!

Current model shows it heading northward. Even if it stays off the east coast of FL I'd expect quite a bit of rain for a few days from all the moisture spun off from the outer bands. Most weather sites do show an uptic on chance of rain next week. Rain is both good and bad. I don't like getting soaked at the parks especially with a couple teenage girls whining! Even with ponchos our shoes and socks are water logged. But, often the rain shortens lines at some attractions.

Our local met's blog has been all over a major hurricane next week stating our weather in KY is dependent on what this thing does. The map a few days ago had it hitting more along Mississippi/Alabama but today's charts are more into south Florida. The timing looks to be before Columbus Day weekend though, maybe a Thursday/Friday time frame. I would remain in the be aware that something is out there frame of mind, but would not change any plans based on what is currently projected.
Lexington or Louisville? I'm not sure I've seen that blog yet. LOL
