Has anyone used or known anyone that has gone to one? We had my son evaluated by HLC, he is really struggling in school. So I had a meeting to hear the results and also to find out what they recommend for him. It all sounds good, but by the time all is said and done it is going to cost almost $7000.00 :faint: :earseek: ! I thought I was going to throw up lol.

I would suggest a private tutor for your son. I worked for HLC while in college and I cant say I would have been satisfied if I was a parent sending my child there.
With a tutor, your son could work on specific assignments and homework related to what he is doing in school using his own school books-at HLC at least when I worked there, that wasnt allowed. It was just strengthening basic skills using the centers books.
There are many certified teachers who work as tutors and could help your son effectively and without you shelling out the type of money you would at HLC.

A large part of my sons problems have to do with basic skills. I was a little surprised when I was told that they don't help with the kids homework. He needs help with both. The woman said he should be seen for two hours at a time, and would love him to go 5 times a week. As she said it I was sitting there thinking, "I'm sure you would$$$$$$$$.".

I love my son, but do I love him enough to give up the trip I am trying to plan to DWD next summer ;) ?

allicat, do you think it has a good program for kids that need help with basic skills?

Right now I am thinking I should give it a trial run for a month or so, and only have him go two or three times a week. I think five times wtll be too much for him. Maybe I should do a combo of HLC and a private tutor. I'm so confused.

I don't have any experience with Huntington, or any of the national chains, but I do think it's very important to figure out what kind of help your son needs before you choose how you're going to get that help. Some students need actual tutoring, which is just someone going over what they're learning in school, or what they should have learned in school but didn't for some reason. That's best for students who transfered schools and ended up missing an important concept, students who were sick and missed school for awhile, or something like that.

Most students need help with learning how to learn. Tutoring may help those students, but they'll never stop needing tutoring (unless they teach themselves how to learn).

I agree with Kermit-narrow down what your son is having trouble with before going to HLC.
Is your son having trouble with just one subject? And have you talked to the teacher? I would start with the teacher and find out where he is having trouble and what she would recommend for your son.
Often, school districts have basic skills classes- maybe yours does?

While these learning centers may or may not help your son, the bottom line at these places is money. When parents are at the end of their rope and want their kids to succeed, they are likely to open their checkbooks. HLC knows this. IMHO, seek out other avenues first, use HLC as a last resort.

Thanks for the advice! We have decided to give HLC a try, but will only start with 22 hours. I'll send my son 2x a week (total of 4 hours). He does need help with his basic skills, so after the first 22 hours we will evaluate if he will continue with HLC or not. The more I thought about it, the more uncomfortable I felt about paying for 125 hours upfront (we would get a discount this way) and then being locked into something that might not be helping him. We are also considering a private tutor at some point to help him work on math. Thanks again!
