Actually, a suburb called Cypress, on the northwest side - 70 miles from the coast.
Businesses and schools are all shutdown. Some stores remain open, but staples like bread, water, canned foods low or gone.
Many gas stations have run out of gas entirely, so we are not driving anywhere to conserve the fuel. After Rita (our last big storm) the biggest problem was availability. The storm had left us virtually untouched, but no gas was available, especially in those areas without power.
I stocked up earlier in the week: bottled water, tuna, and, I kid you not, 17 pounds of chocolate. (Priorities, don't cha know!).
The actual storm is expected around midnight, but this storm is a little different in that it has a huge "eye" and is massive, creating an early and abnormally large storm surge. The island and shore communities (Galveston and Kemah) are taking a lot of water already - roads have been under water for a couple of hours, and they are expecting possibly another 20 feet tonight. Hopefully, hopefully, this storm will blow itself apart quickly, as its center is not well defined.
Good luck to all impacted!
