We hung two bird feeders at each side of the house's second story on Sunday. I filled both of them to the brim. The birds found them and wiped out the food supply already. I've filled them both again and there's a party going on at each feeder. We made sure to hang them out of reach of the squirrels and cats although my cat is sitting at the top of the steps IN the house watching the birds through the window. Hope she doesn't throw herself at the glass, lol!!

Thus far, we've just fed sunflower seeds. What does everyone else feed their birds?

in 50 lb bags..but we also have 5 feeders, and if I filled every one of them to the top everyday, the birds would empty them every day!!!..I only fill them about 1/3 of the way..in winter I buy black oil sunflower seeds and mix more of them into the wild birdseed..I hear that they are more protein for the birds when it's cold..I also put some out along with cracked corn for the chipmunks and squirrels, along with some peanuts in the shell (bluejays and woodpeckers love them too!)..and we have a little bench my husband made with a big screw in it..and we buy dried corn on the cob and screw the cobs onto the thing, it's fun to watch the squirrels and chipmunks sit on it and eat each piece of corn individually..we never have a shortage of birds at our house..and our 2 cats are forever sitting in the kitchen windows watching them!..also...if you are feeding the birds, please make sure to have a birdbath or supply of fresh water on hand for them!

The birds have fled our yard for better feeding elsewhere. I haven't had to fill our feeders in about 6 weeks. :sad2:

Perhaps your birds went over to Lynxstch's?
Sounds like a tasty spread over there.::yes::

Black oil sunflower seeds, wild flower seed, millet seed mixed together. Have a corn cob feeder that is covered in peanut butter. Near the woodline, have a feeder that has the seed mixture plus raisins in it.

I love the shelled peanut idea! I bet that is fun to watch.:thumbsup2

Could be! She sure sounds like the cafeteria of bird food. I think I'll try some new feed this week. I know that last year I was able to coax a few in with some dried cranberries. We do have plenty of turkeys every day, but that's about it as far as the birds are concerned.

When we first moved here I thought it odd we had very few squirrels. However for the past 2 years the farmer has planted corn in the field behind our house and this year I've seen quite a few more.

We buy the mixed seed bird feed from Costco at £5 per sack....25kg IIRC.

Our seeds are in a squirrel proof feeder, those darn pesky grey squirrels are very pushy !!!

Just my small garden birds can empty the feeder in 3 days

Ours wiped us out of safflower seeds and aren't too happy with the wild bird mix I have out now..

We have 4 cats and they just LOVE watching the "cat tv" :)

Ours are the same way! We have 3 feeders - two filled with black oil sunflower seed and one for suet.

I do think that the squirrels are getting some of it though - especially the suet!

I'm feeding solid black oil sunflower seeds right now. I swear I can see the birds getting fatter. My husband said we have to lay off filling the containers or the birds won't be able to get off the ground, lol! I'll buy some peanuts as we have lots of woodpeckers. I put out an ear of corn every few days on a stick. My husband drilled a hole into the center of them so I can lock them down and watch the critters. I remember my father feeding corn years ago when it became apparent that he had a family of groundhogs living in the hill behind their house. Those were the fattest little hogs I've ever seen. The squirrels were so fat they wobbled on thick tree branches. It was so fun to watch them. It's one of my fondest memories with my Dad. He had huge trash cans - several of them-in the garage all full of different feed stuffs. He'd take you in there and explain everything and then walk around and talk to all the birds and squirrels. They were so used to him, they just kept eating while he filled the feeders. Amazing.

In the winter only we do black oil sunflower seeds and sometimes some suet. We can only have our feeders out when the bears are denned up for the winter. No one has invented a bear proof feeder yet!
