I am an RCI member, and any RCI member can BUY an "Extra Vacation". This is not the pool of units for exchange, this is a separate pool for sale.

It actually looks like, at least at OKW, that it is about three units per week, one studio, one 1 bedroom, and one two bedroom. Not enough to get me riled up about anything. These look like units that Member Services may estimating will be used by the members for trades. Or, perhaps they are a portion of the unit DVC/Disney retains, and they can do with them as they wish.

I wonder if this impacts availability for members.

I'm about 90% sure this is just another outlet for cash/CRO inventory. If you read the resort details, you'll find that exchange guests are to call Member Services for Magical Express, and rental guests are to use CRO/WDTC's web site. Because the inventories are managed separately, you need a "CRO" reservation number to use that web site, not a "DVC Points" reservation number. (They follow different formats).

For the prices I checked, they are a consistent 20% off CRO's rack rates. Not a great price, but not horrible, and not quite as good as the Member cash price.

Also, the RCI rental inventory is completely separate from the Exchange inventory, both in Points and Weeks, as near as anyone can tell. This means that these units are not available for exchange, only rental. The simplest answer: this is cash inventory.

I think that would be great news for DVC members if they found (through RCI) an additional marketer of cash rooms. (I think there seemed to be more DVC owners trading than CRO could market rooms)

If DVC gets more cash for rooms, that should help to lower points trading costs and/or help with MF's

I'd be surprised if a lot of units rented through RCI---those prices are astronomical compared to the "typical" Extra Vacation. I could be wrong, though.

Can any RCI owners tell if they have had any success yet in exchanging into the DVC for a week yet? My mother owns in the RCI and keeps getting told that no DVC owners have traded out any weeks with RCI yet and there is no exchanges for available. But she was told she could "buy" a week for $4000, for a 2 Bdrm.

I am not fully understanding how this whole thing is going to work. If RCI is waiting for DVC owners to trade out weeks for something in the RCI network, wouldn't DVC be waiting for RCI owners to do the same?? Then wouldn't that mean we would be at a stale-mate? Each waiting on the other to make the first move or trade?

If there are so many weeks up for "sale", why wouldn't we be able to go ahead and trade for those?

During the Annual DVC Association meeting Jim Lewis made a commitment to members saying he was going to do everything he could to lessen the pool of cash rooms and move them to the available pool for DVC members staying on points. He said one of the biggest complaints he got last year was the availability of rooms for DVC members.

Maybe it's just the size of the list, but I would hope it would shrink someday.

I have not executed an exchange, but I have personally seen units in RCI Weeks. It takes a top-shelf trader to see them. I do not have an RCI Points account, but others have seen units there as well. Finally, there is also inventory in Extra Vacations. As near as anyone can tell, the three pools of inventory are entirely separate.

I'm sure if you went to www.disneyworld.com and tried to book rooms at those resorts at those times, you'd see a ton of inventory too. The RCI search tool just shows you everything at once, and that increases its impact.

RCI attempts to provide "like for like" exchanges, and the definiton of "alike" is very attuned to supply and demand.

The short version: the higher demand (equivalently, the lower supply) for the specific week, resort, and area you are giving up, the more options you will be given in exchange. The lower the demand (equivalently, the higher the supply) for your specific week, resort, and area, the fewer options you will be given.

So, if you're depositing New Years Eve in New York City, or July 4th on the North Carolina Outer Banks, or something else that everyone wants, you'll be given your pick from just about everything that RCI has in the spacebank. But, if you are turning in a mid-January week in overbuilt Branson, a "mud week" in the upper midwest (after the snow, but before spring hits), or even a hurricane-season week in a lesser Orlando resort, then you're going to find that your pickings are slim indeed.

"Gold Crown" and similar awards reflect resort quality, not supply and demand. True, all things being equal, a higher-quality resort should have more demand than a lower-quality one. But, all things are rarely equal. There are plenty of gold crown resorts that, even in what are supposedly "red" seasons, don't trade worth beans, because there are already similar weeks in the space bank that could hardly be given away. Often, that's because the developer is dumping unsold weeks into the spacebank by the fistful in hopes of getting new tour traffic, but there can be other reasons as well.

The only solution to a trade power issue is to hope that the thing you want becomes more common/less in demand, or the thing that you are giving up becomes more in demand/less common. If she owns a floating week, the first step is to make sure she's reserving the very best week she possibly can for deposit. And, don't go just by "color" to decide this---you have to look deeper. For example, Orlando is red year-round, but it's obvious that an Easter, New Years, or Presidents week is going to be worth a lot more to folks than a mid-September, dripping-with-sweat, kids-in-school, the-hurricanes-are-coming week.

"You can trade anywhere" is probably one of the biggest myths in timeshare. For many (even, most) people, it's just not true.

Keep in mind that Disney had II block the Orlando and surrounding timeshares from participating in exchanges with DVC. They may have done the same thing with RCI. I mention this since you have Orlando as one of the locations in your example when talking about trading power.

Yep, there are all kinds of little wrinkles like this. For example, Wyndham owners appear to get a "boost" in trade power when looking for other Wyndham resorts. The real story is pretty complicated. It is likely that no one who isn't (wasn't) an RCI employee knows how the sausage is really made.

I hope this happens, I personally think the pool of cash rooms is much greater than we realize and is definitely keeping members from getting rooms.

One easy way to look at this is to check the color of her trade. It is going to have to be a redweek in order to trade into DVC. As for the success of it, I am waiting right now for the RCI site to be working correctly. My in laws have a very high demand trade (Feb in Maui) and I am waiting to see if we can get anything. I will be happy to let you know. We have never had a problem trading into anywhere else in the past. I am wondering if the trade window is going to be the same or not. In other words, am I only going to be able to check 7 months out. We shall see.
