M Scott1851s thread about feminism has got me to thinking, but I wanted to start a new thread so that more people would read this. Many things may still be unfair towards women, but we are all so lucky to live in the United States or other like nations. We owe a great debt to the thousands of American women (and men) who have gone before us and fought for our rights. Did anyone see Iron Jawed Angels? If not, rent it and watch it (with your spouse or SO if possible). Many people suffered for women just to get us the right to vote. The same goes for other such movements (e.g. civil rights).
While our personal circumstances may be just plain horrible at times, we generally have it so good here. But even when we disagree about certain issues (e.g. abortion, school, work, politics, religion), we must all still try to respect each other as people. We have the right to disagree.
I am so glad to have been born in America. Other women (and children) around the world are still living in deplorable conditions, and they aren't free to do anything about it. Is everyone aware of this horrific situation http://www.amnesty.org/ailib/intcam/femgen/fgm1.htm? I wonder what our government would do if millions of boys and men around the world were being castrated each year. But, hey, it's only women
. I am not saying that our government needs to do something and fix the world. But what about us - the people (women and men) who do have it so good?? How can we turn a blind eye to this and other atrocities that go on towards our fellow human beings
. What should we do? I don't know. But there must be something.
And no I am not a flaming liberal. And I'm not a member of Amnesty International, at least not yet. Female mutilation is just one horrific thing going on in the world, and that was the best site I could find quickly. I guess I'd consider myself moderate with some leanings toward the Republican ideals and some towards the Democratic ideals. And I happen to be a Christian, not always succeeding but trying to live as Christ did and simply love people.
