Humanely raised meet?

It might be fairly new. I didn’t see the option my last cruise but I have a cruise coming up in February and can see the options under “special requests”

This was indeed there on our last cruise (October on the Wonder), but unfortunately our needs didn't fall into one of these categories, so our TA still had to contact them directly.

I just started to read more on the topic. I am not a vegetarian nor do I wish to be and I'm not really a crunchy person generally.... however I do care about the circumstances of animals and how they are treated and if you read up on the topic more you can find that some animals are treated terribly when they don't need to be, if enough of the public took a position on it.

To the OP - I don't think Disney is "there" yet with a more progressive stance on the food on the boat because, like PP mentioned, operationally they need to stock up in international ports and it's too difficult and expensive to manage the list of food vendors in this regard (would be my guess).... but I applaud your question in a sincere way and not snarky way :). Thanks for asking it :).
Actually many of the international ports will have better regulations about how animals need to be treated humanely than the U.S. does, seriously a lot of the stuff we do isn't allowed in other countries, even some of the poorer countries do better in the regard.

I wonder if there is certified kosher meat available. My husband also prefers to know he’s eating a responsibly dispatched animal, so we buy kosher beef. Which begs the question - does DCL procure kosher meat for its kosher guests?

Exactly. Those animals are also generally killed in a more humane manner than a wild animal.

That's actually a really good point, most wild animals suffer a brutal death as it is usually inflicted by other animals, and they do it in a horrific way mostly.

DCL does not have a kosher (or halal) kitchen. Meals needed to conform to religious dietary requirements have to be ordered ahead of time. They are heated in the kitchen and then served sealed so the guest knows that the meal is appropriate for them to eat according to the dietary guidelines. It's the same process that occurs at WDW.

Hah, I sound like a maniac now, just want to say that I do eat meat and I know it is nutritious and I think it's good we think about how we want it. Would love it if Disney would serve 'better' meat, maybe only to feel myself less guilty. As weird as I am, I do believe animals can feel pain, stress and fear. We are the humans, we can think, plan and foresee so we should be the ones responsible for a good treatment for the animals we like to eat.

About being killed in the wild, having lived in Africa, yes, there animals get killed brutally but it is usually fast and only to feed another animal that will only kill for as much as he need. How we treat the animals for our consumption is worse; put them on a transport squeezed together for many many hours, kick them to get them to walk to where they get slaughtered, hang them up side down, the smell, the fear, the stress. I think any chicken would prefer the unexpected, fast and efficient way the fox kills them ;).

About cows and pigs, I don't know where they live in the wild and who would be their killers in the western world.

It is a frozen meal that is heated up. For non-meat items (ie. doughnuts, milk) they have it packaged bearing a kosher symbol.

Thanks Lizabu! The blue 'button' add is missing after 'special requests' on that page (as is change dining). Probably not possible anymore since sailing is in 5 weeks.

Weird. My cruise is in 3 weeks and I still have the option on mine....I would call DCL. But also, if you look at menus posted online, there are vegetarian options on every menu. But vegan...not sure about that.

Interesting, will call them. I saw indeed a lot of other options if I would not want to eat meat (I like meat a lot, just worry a lot). I am so looking forward to all the delicious food, and look even more forward to get it all served, what a luxury!

I doubt DCL could easily source enough certified humane meat. I would think the practical problems are obvious and while the question is well meaning it’s naive. I’m surprised that someone who cares about animal welfare would even take a cruise given the negative impact cruises have on oceans.

No reason to be snarky about it.

That's like saying someone who cares for the environment shouldn't drive a car. Its not an all or nothing proposition. We all do what we can - some more and some less. Some of us recycle, ride bikes to work, use programmable thermostats. Some don't.

OP tries to source humanely raised meat (as do I) and others don't. I try to patronize restaurants that use local food sources and advertise humanely raised meat sources. So should I never go on a cruise?

I agree with lorenni... while its not incorrect to point out the damage done to oceans by ships I also fall into the group of doing what I can when I can to an extent I find reasonable. It's easy to feel any attempt is futile when looking at the big picture - choosing how far to go is up to an individual and isn't necessarily due to naiveté.

May I remind everyone once again to not resort to name calling and/or personal insults?

My daughter is vegan and how they do things at the parks is that there is something on most menus that is vegetarian. If you tell them you are vegan they can usually make a few modifications to make it vegan. Maybe it’s similar.
