Actually this happened to a student in our school system 8 years ago and its not as uncommon as some would think. Very sad though.

The child I was speaking of was given a sex change in 1st grade. I have the yearbooks and you can see in her kindergarten year she was a girl and then in 2nd grade a boy.

Wow to have such understanding parents! And a school district that seems like they actually get it! Kudos to the family and school district. And not disclosing the information, unfortunately it is still needed for the safety of those who are transgender.

I know, I thought Docs weren't aloud to do things like that until legal age, but I guess in this child's case they knew he would never grow out of it. It was really sad because when she was a girl, she was completely convinced that she was a boy. Her facial structure even looked male, but her sexual organs were female. It was very bizarre and we are in a smaller town so 8 years later people are still talking about it.

Could it be she was convinced because of all the examinations and psychological evaluations she was put through that might have started her thinking that maybe something was wrong with her?

I don't think so. This little girl was so uncomfortable with using the girls restroom in kindergarten that her bathroom breaks were always on a different schedule alone. She didn't interact with the girls and her face looked so much like a male's that she managed to fit in with the boys pretty well. I think at that age the other childern were oblivious to what was going on. By the next grade rolled around, I'm sure that she became more aware of her parts and realized that they didn't fit with other boys. However this is speculation because I only worked with her in Kindergarten. Really, I think what was done was the best thing. She looked like a boy, acted like a boy, lived like a boy, and esentially was one except for that detail

In the case where the child changed sexes early on maybe it wasn't a case of gender dysphoria but a case of the misassignemnt of gender at birth. Some children are born with ambiguous genitalia where the doctor decides it is a girl or a boy and sometimes they get it wrong. I can't imagine a true sex change operation in youth unless they were cosmetically correcting the organs that were present but perhaps in the wrong place.

I really don't know if it was double gender or not. I was an intern and not present for a lot of the conversations between the parents and teachers.
