I think we are finally going to get Hughesnet(our only option over dial-up). I need some suggestions for a wireless router. I don't want to spend too much on it, but want it to work decently.

Thanks

All I can speak of is one we have. WE live in single wide trailer with desktops in bedroom and 2 laptops that vist front area of house and outside occasionally. I have a linskys n wireless router that I bought at walmart was 79.00 something if I recall right. My desktop and laptop have built in wireless cards. Dh's desktop is wired to router and old laptop has a USB stick to connect wirelessly. All work great and have great signal with router sitting on top of DH's computer desk at more or less back of trailer and living room being at front of trailer.

linksys is a good brand-its the home user version of cisco-the largest manufacturer of routing and switching equipment. you can also purchase D link or netgear. they will all run in the 50 to 70 dollar range. One thing to be sure of-if your computers are more than 10 months old check see what wireless band the adapters are- you can do this by going to device manager-selecting your wireless card-going to the advanced tab-you will see something that says 802.11b g or n. the standards are backward compatible but not forward-so if you have a computer with a g band adaptor and get an n band router-the g band computer will not be able to connect-but an n band computer can connect to a g band router. Other than that-the are all easy to install and configure.

I'm on Hughesnet right now, and we also have it over at the farm. Here we have a Cisco router, and we've got a Linksys over at the farm. We've got 2 desktops linked by cable (running through the crawlspace), 2 laptops linked wirelessly, and a printer hooked directly into the router here at the house, plus itouchs and phones on occasion. It works great, and the kids' friends are able to connect wirelessly easily when they bring their devices over.

Just about any router is going to do an adequate job, but I like Cisco and Linksys because I know they're reliable and easy to set up.

At the farm, there's usually only one computer hooked up at a time.

Just make sure you set a password on your wireless system. We're out in the boonies in both locations, so it would be pretty obvious if someone were parked trying to get into our network, but we still have them password protected.

Also, make sure you check http://192.168.0.1/ (hughesnet system home) regularly to make sure you don't go over your usage allowance. With two teenagers in the house, we had some problems with them going over, but they started using the hughesnet download manager to download during the unlimited period.

I have installed the staus meter app on both of our desktops to help with watching allowance. It just is anothger icon on my tool bar on both of my screen.

Thanks for all the replies. We got a router last night.
It is a Belkin Share N300. The man at the store said it would be good.
Does anyone have this one? Is it a ogood one?
